single shots

Anyone here shoot single shots? Browning 1885's and Ruger No.1's?
I shoot an 1885 high wall in 7mm rem.mag. Fun rifles to work with. Still working on the load for the best accuracy but this is a never ending search.

I've got a real Infantry Trap Door Springfield in 45-70 if that counts. Too bad it has 4" lopped off the barrel and the stock has been shortened. Also have a Perdesoli 1859 Sharps repo if that counts. Single shots are fun and I'd love to have an 1885 Browning in 45-70 (or even a Quigley style Sharps).

got a .223 harrington and richardson for groundhogs....handy little bast@rd....

A bit off-thread but a point to consider: Phil Sharpe has commented that for a single shot rifle, only a rimmed cartridge case really makes sense--it can be loaded to higher pressures than a rimmed or belted case.

Now, that was written before the fully-enclosed case head design that Remington brought out with its 721, but still...

I do hunt at times with a 7x57 Rem. single shot that I will never part with. :) It just is such a fun good shooter to play with. Rolls coyotes right up into a dead pile of fur. :)The full stock and 29 inch barrel sure helps for off hand shooting too.

My most beloved 416 Rigby rifle is a Ruger #1 chambered for that most venerable of rounds.

It is accurate, well-balanced, fun to shoot and a truly handsome to look at.

The good thing about a single shot is the fact that you do not have the added length of the magazine and action like in the case of a bolt. Therefore, it handles and feels more like a shotgun. Excellent for point-shooting (hence its appeal for close brushwork) yet strong and rigid enough for deliberate, accurate shots.

I'll second 416Rigby's remarks. I'm primarily a bird hunter but when hunting deer I use a Ruger #1A in .270 topped with a 1.5x-5x Leupold Vari-X III. It is the only rifle that handles like my shotguns.

For a time, I owned a Browning Lo-Wall in .223 and it was a quite pretty and nicely accurate rifle -- 3 shot groups into .75 inches. Every now and again I think about getting another these rifles but this time in .243.
