Single shot youth .22lr love

Well, I *try* to be a shooter, and not collector, but I got on a bit of a kick in the last couple of years, and ended up justifying a few cheap but neat purchases without a specific use, resulting in minor theme / collection...

First came the T/C Hot Shot break action. I had the bbl cut and crowed from 19" to 16.2", with front sight setback (stock irons). This rifle weighs only 2.5 pounds!

Then came the Marlin 915YS bolt action 16" (scoped).

Then I decided I had to have a certain Remington 580 23" (scoped). This is the only one not a youth rifle, but it generally fits in with the other 3.

Finally, I rounded it out with a Savage Cub thumbhole 16" (scoped).

I add slip-on recoil pads to the youth models, to make the LOP work for me.

The Rem 580 is a gem - super quiet and very accurate with Aguila Super Colibri. It's now the suburban grackle assassin. It's these plague birds' worst nightmare.

The rest are "kayaking / backpacking" rifles. Ha ha, nice justification. :)

I just love these little single shot .22s for some reason. But only way to get them in the 16" ultralight versions I prefer, generally is to get the youth models. I would cut the 580 to 16" if it weren't for the fact that that would make the Super Colibris louder (plus it's a classic so don't want to screw with it).

What ammos shoot well in your 915s, Cubs, and 580/581s? Anyone else still a fan of single shot .22s?

I'm a single-shot fan,,,

I'm a single-shot fan,,,
But I like the full size rifles.

When it's a mag fed repeater,,,
I try and buy a single-shot adaptor for it.

I have a Henry Acu Bolt that is a joy to shoot,,,
In fact, it's probably my most fired rimfire rifle of them all.

I own a magnificent CZ-452 Military Trainer,,,
I shoot it a lot more since I bought a single-shot adaptor.

I also have an H&R Sportster,,,
A Western Field 815,,,
A Savage Model 3A,,,
And a Crickett.

So yeah,,,
I'm a fan of single-shots. :)

Very nice. May have to try a Henry bolt.

When it's a mag fed single-shot,,,

I hear ya. I had a 452 Scout that I just put single shot adapter in.

I like full sized stocks, but short barrels in a .22.

My Remington 581 oddly enough likes Remington Thunderbolts more than anything else I've tried. I don't have a ton of options but I've used...
Rem Golden Bullets
Rem Cyclones
Rem Target (forgot their official name)
cci standard
cci velocister
cci Stinger
Winchester bulk
Winchester Wildcats
Federal auto match

I also have a Rossi 22/410 combo that likes Thunderbolts and I'm glad that's the cheapest stuff I can find when it's findable.

And a Crickett.

I could be mistaken on this as I have taken only cursory glances at the Crickets, but are they the "same" gun as the old Chipmunk? If so, does anyone make a stock with a longer butt for adults?

If you go to the cricket website, you will find an assortment of adult sized stocks. It's a shame that savage doesn't do the same for the rascal.

I bought a .22 single shot for each of my grandkids, 2 crickets and one rascal. I think the rascal is the better rifle but not by a lot...

Another good kids rifle is the Henry Mini-Bolt

A friend bought one for his daughter,,,
She started out on my cricket at 25 yards.

When she was ready for a rifle of he own,,,
We looked at all of the kid size rifles,,,
The mini-Bolt was what she chose.

Now it may have been the bright orange stock,,,
Like her father she is a dyed-in-the-wool OK State Cowboys Fan.

In quality of build,,,
It ranks up there with my full size Acu Bolt.

The Williams Fire-Sights are very nice,,,
She is in a youth target program through the 4H clubs,,,
Even with her little rifle she is holding her own against everyone else.

The only complaint I have with the rifle is the trigger,,,
Not the pull because it's very light and crisp,,,
It's the thinness of it's stamped part,,,
I wish it were wider in shape.

A Stevens Favorite and a CZ 455 bolt gun. Both wonderfully accurate. I wish the Favorite was drilled and tapped for a scope.

I own a few .22LR's but I'm looking for my first single shot bolt gun for the simplicity. I want a full size model. I looked at a Winchester 121 yesterday and had another single shot Win in my hands s well, model 64 maybe?

I have the following right now;

1) Glenfield 60
2) Marlin 60
1) Glenfield 25
1) Marlin 795
1) Winchester 190
1) Winchester 290
1) Ruger American compact

There is something about a rimfire that brings fun back into shooting and for small game, they get the job done!

Hello SARuger,,,

...but I'm looking for my first single shot bolt gun for the simplicity.

That is the beauty of them for me,,,
Simple and functional.

With my semi's I always revert to spray and pray,,,
I can't resist the urge to quickly burn a mag or two or three. :o

With my single-shots I go into a Zen-like state,,,
It's very relaxing and satisfying to the soul.

If you do choose an older rifle,,,
You will probably be very pleased with it.

I have no empirical evidence for this,,,
But the older single-shot rifles seem to have a higher quality level.

I recently purchased a 50's vintage Western Field 815 for $100.00,,,
It is actually a Mossberg 820 branded to be sold by Montgomery Wards.

This rifle is absolutely marvelous!,,,
Very precise and simply a joy to shoot.

So look for vintage Mossberg, Remington, Savage, Winchester, and Marlin rifles,,,
They can usually be found in the $100.00 to $150 price range,,,
You won't be sorry that you did.
