Single shot shotgun recommendations

I know that autos, pumps etc are more "tactical" :-) but for
some reason I have been really wanting to get a basic single
shot shotgun here lately.

Looked at the one made by H&R and saw that Rossi also had
a few models. Can anyone here give me some advice and
feedback of what to look for in purchasing one?

Mostly it will be for camping use or target shooting in the
woods for fun. Just want a basic shotgun that is simple to
use and clean.

I really liked the H&R Tamer model that held the shells in
the stock but, unfortunately it only comes in .410 and 20
gauge..no 12 gauge models. Still I really liked the Tracker
20 gauge model with it's 20 inch barrel. Their 12 gauge
had like a 28 inches barrel.

A 12 gauge single shot has discouraged many from ever becoming serious shotgunners. It is too light for the recoil and will knock the snot out of you, not any fun to shoot. Baikal also makes a single shot. 20 gauge is better, 410 is fun, but the ammo is expensive. Mark

+1 for what Oregunner is saying. If your heart is set on a 12 gauge single shot I'd suggest shoulder protection, those guns really buck

The NEF/H&R platform has a great rack record and a number of fans, including Yr Humble Scrivener.

Everything bigger than 28 gauge kicks, some rather emphatically.

However, they're light, low cost, simple MOA and tons of aftermarket stuff.

I only have experience with 2 singleshot shotguns. I own a Bridge Black Prince and a Stevens. I love my Stevens and I really like how it opens up, makes for quick reloading. Mine has a 36 inch barrel, full choke, and it's a 10 gauge. I think I paid somewhere around $250 for it used. Im gonna use it turkey hunting possibly. If you want an H&R 12 gauge singleshot, you can get them used around here for $40-$80 dollars in great shape. I haven't shot Rossi singleshot, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. I own a Rossi gun and it's of very good quality. H&R/New England guns are also good quality, I've just never shot one of their shotguns, but the newer ones I've seen have shorter barrels. I do remember my dad getting 2 older models at a gun store for $75 for both, and they had long barrels.

+1

oregun has got it, a 12 single barrel, heck a 20 sometimes, can kick like a darn mule. But.........they are very traditional, affordable and common.
There's many a country place that has an old single barrel tucked in a corner at the back door for what ever might need shot.

The H&R is as good as any, but an old Win 37 in fair shape is a classic too.
