Single Shot Question

I have a single shot 20 gauge New England. It is the Tracker II model with rifle sights. It has a rifle type barrel and is made and sold as a deer shotgun.
My questions are: Can a load of say #4 or #5 be used in a turkey hunting application with this firearm? My intensions - if safe are to have my 13 year old with me hunting this spring turkey season. I limit myself to about 25-30 yards with my own pump 20. I understand that we would have to try a few different loads for patern. Just wanted to hear if this is a safe alternative to going out and spending $ I don't have right now? It seems to me it would work but I wanted to hear a lot of other's feed back before I assume it is safe and will work without damage to gun or shooter..... Thanks :D

Is it a smooth bore, or rifled? If it's smooth bore, firing shot out of it will be fine, just need to pattern it for the best loads. If rifled, it is made for slugs only. Shot can be fired from a rifled barrel, but will pattern horribly, possibly with large holes in the pattern. It is not generally recommended.

MY info tells me that a tracker II has a rifled barrel,I would think that you could safely fire any 20 ga. shell you like in it but because of the rifled bore it will be a poor performer with shot.I don't think it possible to damage a steel barrel with lead shot,I also doubt this gun is choked.I would not use it for a shotgun unless I had to.I think someone would be pretty dissapointed if a chance of a lifetime was blown.I'd let him use mine or barrow one.

Thanks for the info....

Thanks for the info..... I think we will have enough time to save up for a good used single between now and late April.......

Again Thanks for the info....... :)
