Single-Shot Muzzleloading Pistol

Hey all,

I've decided I want a black powder pistol. I have a TC Hawken that I used to take my first deer with. It's a ton of fun to shoot. I'd really like to get a single shot pistol to match. It wouldn't be for anything serious, but I would like it to last. Any suggestions?

The Lyman Plains pistol, percussion lock, available in either .50 or .54 caliber. I own the .54 caliber model, and the quality is right up there with T/C. Dixie Gun works has them complete or in Kit form. A rugged, quality built, fun pistol.

The two top-of-the line single shots are the T/C Encore (pistol) with a 209x50 ML barrel and a Kahnke. Both are extremely hard to find (I'm looking for a Kahnke myself).

I use 30-40 grains, depending upon if I'm just plinking or shooting at small game. You have to experiment with the individual gun, bullet, powder, etc. to find your "sweet spot". Often, less is more when is comes to powder charges.

If you live near a Borders or other book store, the 2011 Gun Digest has a test-fire article on the Lyman .54 Plains pistol.

T/C Patriot if you can find one.
I was in Arkansas visiting some relatives in 2005, and my cousin's husband said he'd picked up a black powder pistol at a garage sale for a few bucks, but had never bothered to buy powder, caps, balls, or patches, and didn't expect he ever would... he goes and finds it and hands me an unfired .45 cal T/C Patriot pistol and says, "If you want it, it's yours."
