Single Barrel Shotguns

Hello,

I've been looking at Single Barrels as a inexpensive, starter shotgun, either in 12 or 20 gauge. The ones that caught my eye are made by Rossi and NEF. What are your recommendations and experiences from these manufacturers and which gauge would you prefer. I am new to shotguns so I am kind of in the dark.
I also saw the NEF pardner pump. Are they any good. 170 dollars for a pump shotgun seems to good to be true.

Comments are appreciated. Thx. =-)

170

can't speak for the brands but i know that 170 isn't to shabby. ALthough, a new mossberg maverick is ~140 at acedemy, and i bought a 2002 remington 870 supermag last year for 200 even.

so shop around....you can findem cheaper.

NEF makes a good solid firearm that looks good after about a case of beer. If you are thinking about a pump you can't go wrong with an 870, Stoeger, or one of the Mossbergs (again some of these are not too attractive). On the low end of autos, the Mossbergs come up again as well as the Stoeger Model 2000. All pretty solid guns and at the prices they sell at, they are almost disposable!

I am not sure where you are located but I usually watch the sales that Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, and Academy (as LSU said) put on. Around Christmas and dove season they prices get low.

Good luck!

There is a used Remington 1100 synthetic in the "Gun Show" section for sale at $350. That would be a pretty good deal I would think.

I like single barrel guns, too. The problem with NEF is that they cram a piece of railroad tie into the butt of all their singleshot longarms, and don't bother to file them down. The wood to metal fit on an NEF is abysmal, on their best day. To me, this is a sign of poor craftsmanship, among other things. This is just my view, as I have read that at least a half dozen folks are happy with their handy-guns.

I have found a couple of "as-new" model 870 Remington pump shotguns for $175. I have not seen an NEF pump, but the reputation of the 870 is excellent, and my experience with it is good. This might be a way to get a good product for a decent price. I found mine in the newspaper classifieds.

Good luck.

If the Rossi's are anything like the one I have, don't get it w/o buying an extra recoil pad. This thing has a junior stock on it and it kicks like a mule. The first day I went practicing with it, I came back with a big bruise on my shoulder. I got the recoil pad the next day. I only shoot it if I need to. (I have a problem parting with firearms, one can never have too many ... does that make me a candidate for a 12 step program?)

I bought one of the NEF pardner pump shotguns about six months ago for my Dad, just got around to shooting with it a few days ago. It has a smooth action and shoots fine. The wood fit could be better, but for 150.00 I am not going to whine.

The shotgun I use is a M37 rip off (norinco) that I got at a dunhams sports shop for 85.00. And if you compare them its night and day.

My brother has one of the NEF break action 20 gauge and really likes it when hunting. But he had some problems with the recoil. Just hold the stock to your shoulder tightly and lean into it a bit.

Both the pump and the break action are fine. If you are going to be walking miles and shooting a few times then the lighter break action would be better. And if you are going to be doing less walking and more shooting then the pump would be better.

No More than $100

Look in pawn shops to find a wide selection of NEF or older HR single barrel SG. Might even find the occasional Ithaca. I would not spend more than 100 dollars and usually not more than $75 for one of these used pieces. That said, an HR was my first SG and though it is a little rough in some areas (trigger pull for example) it has been accurate and reliable and I would not hesitate to purchase a new one.

If you are looking in the 170+ range for pumps, I would look at Remington, Mossberg, Maverick, or even Winchester. Again, check out the pawn shops. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I have my grandfather's H&R 12 gauge.

The trigger is downright amazing. It's extremely crisp and light. Not all of them are bad.

The problem, though, is that it weighs 6 pounds, so it kicks like hell. You will need some sort of recoil pad.

The thing about the NEF Pardner pump action is that it is a Chinese made clone of the Remington 870. You might as well buy a used, American made one for the same price.
