Single Action for home defense

What are some effective methods for getting a pair of Ruger Blackhawks in .357mag into action for home defense? I prefer the SA over other pistol becuase of the balance and feel the have for me. Do any of you use them for every day defesive carry, not just for Cowboy shooting. They are the backup pieces for my single shot shotgun a Marlin Model 200 12ga and Winchester m94 in 30/30.

As a general rule, SAs aren't recommended for CCW and home defense use. In a pinch they'll do, of course- any gun is better than no gun.

My night table gun is often an SA in .357, .45 or .41. I like a short barrel for this use. I am often caught carrying the 4 5/8" .41 mag. in the fields and forests, highways and byways of my rural state. 'Defense' can mean a lot of things, but if I had to use one of my SA's against a dangerous felon, I wouldn't feel undergunned, as I know how effective my loads are, and have confidence in my ability with the weapon. If you feel the same, then experts be damned...use the SA. In the .357, I would like a 140-grain Sierra hollowpoint loaded hot. Penetration? Yes.

If they take our guns, I intend to let my hair grow long and acquire the jawbone of an ass.

I have a house full of single actions but do carry and use a double action for self defense. There are some that think I a mold fashioned for using a revolver and not an auto.
In your case the single action sounds like the best option. They are the gun you shoot on a regular basis so you are familiar with them. There are probably many that would critisize your choice for carrying yet have less practice with their own carry piece. Think about it. By having the two loaded with six rounds each, something you can saely do with the Rugers, you have twelve round capacity. ;)

As much as I love SA's, I'd have a DA in the nightstand. I met a guy that woke up with a guy thrusting a kitchen knife through one shoulder and he continued hacking all over his chest. You might not have two hands to cock the hammer or the manual dexterity to cock and fire with one. That guy was very glad he had a DA gun that night.

The only major problem I see with a single action is reloading. I'm going to see if I can convince Ruger to make an Schofield-like ejecting single sixgun.

I think a SA is great for home defense. For those that wake up a bit incoherent, it makes them have to cock before popping off a round. It also keeps you from having to find a safety. My SA 45 is scheduled to replace my DA 357 on my nightstand.

Cowboy:

It is always best to go with the gun you have confidence in.

If you can shoot your SA Ruger without giving it any concious thought, then that is the best gun for you, regardless of "expert" opinion <S>

For that reason, my "boudoir blaster" is a S&W "K" frame with square butt and 4" barrel.

I have shot one so much, that I *know* I can hit the center of mass on any person who enters my house, first shot. without turning on a light.

I also feel that in a one-on-one home invasion situation, if the gunfight isnt over in six shots, you need more practice <S>

The rest we can build, if need be

I use a double action Redhawk (in .45lc) for a quick access wepon.

However while I was at the range trying out my new gun A guy had a Ruger Bisley...What a sweet piece! I liked the grip on that and felt it almost superior to my Redhawk. I say almost cause' the thing was a dog to reload! ( I have another SAA that has a somewhat better ejection rod to compare to).

I think you'd be hell on wheels to the average intruder with your single action.

Don't worry about one hand use...Worst comes to worst you can rub the hammer on you body/bed/wall and cock the hammer in a fight where one arm is useless...just a little trick
