Simmons vs. Burris vs. Leupold

Looking for a scope for my bfr....I have never used a scope on a pistol....I have read good and bad things about these 3 scopes...My ? is I know leupold can take the recoil of my 45/70..but they are tad bit out of my price range...I read Burris scopes don't hold up so well under the recoil...and the Simmons scopes test high but I don't know if that was a factory field test made to look impressive. If anyone has knowledge of one or all 3 please give me some helpful tips.

I've got a Leupold 2.5-8X on one of my pistols. I'm not thrilled with it. The eye relief when dialed down to 2.5x is too long. I can barely hold the pistol far enough away to see through the scope. If I dial the power up to about 6x then the eye relief becomes manageable. However, typical shooting ranges here (at least for my skill level) are too short to use that much magnification.

The Leupold scopes are well worth the extra $$$, but for a more economical choice that is still more than enough to handle the .45-70 look at the 3200 Bushnell. I have several on heavy recoiling handguns and they have held up just fine for years.

I have a Simmon Pro Hunter 2x6 on my 7.5" S&W 500 Magnum. I wanted a silver scope to match the finish on the 500. The only silver scope I could find at the time was a Simmons, so I decided to try it. Despite several people telling me a Simmons scope could not handle the recoil:eek:, I have blasted away over 500 rounds thru the gun.
I developed max power reloads using 440 grain and 325 grain bullets with this scope and it still functions fine and hold zero perfectly:). The eye relief is excellent and I plan to use this combination on my next deer hunt.

My preference is for Nikon or Leupold.

Not only are they quality optics, but they carry a lifetime warranty whether you are the original purchaser or not............

I prefer Nikon but have had very good luck with the Bushnell's I own. In my opinion, Bushnell is as low as I would go and I wouldn't even consider Simmons or Tasco.

I have a Burris 2X scope for my 629 44 rem mag. I did have to send it in once because the nitrogen leak, other than that I have been happy with the scope.I also have a 2-6 power in a Bushnell that I really like, both scopes have very good eye relief. The Bushnell has been on the 44 but now resides on a Ruger MkII Target slabside

I owned an XP-100 in 7BR at until recently. It wore a Redfield 4X pistol scope in a three-ring mount. Excellent scope. I also have older (US-made Burris and Weavers) that are also very good. To add to the Nikon and others, there is Steiner, Swarovski, Zeiss and Leica - all first class (and priced accordingly).

I have two pistol scopes. Both are Leupold. I inherited them. Both are at least 25 years old. I have never used a Burris, but I understand they are still very good. Leupold & Burris were the 2 go-to brands for Pistol silhouette. As I understand things, they are still very good choices.
There was a time that Simmons was a good brand of optics. Nowadays they are not something I would trust to last a long time.

Thanks

Thanks to all who replied....I am still doing some research and when i go and purchase my scope i will take all your comments into serious consideration....thanks again:)....I would like to add that I have never considered Nikon....so now thats on the list....along with all the others that were mentioned...thanks again...give me a few weeks and I will update you all with the scope i purchased along with a pic of my pistol with the new scope:)

that is still more than enough to handle the .45-70 look at the 3200 Bushnell.

I've tried 2 Bushnell 3200s on my 30-30, the first died in 19 shots, the next died in less than 200. If it can't handle a 30-30, I don't think it would take much from a 45-70.

You cant go wrong with a Leupold, Burris is tough to beat for the $$$$ and offers a LIFETIME warranty, regardless of owner.
Either one will handle the .45-70.
