Similarities between Springfield Armory 1911's & Hi-Points

These two makes more than any other (from what i've seen) seem to have a following that either absolutely loves them or wouldn't bother using them as a boat anchor! Hi-Point is regularly attacked and it seems that on the "most disappointing gun" threads,Springfield Armory is always about a 1/3 or 1/2 of the posts. Both these makes also have a base that shoots them regularly and can't speak highly enough of them. Just one of the many mysteries of the universe!;)

The High Point guns are straight blowback, heavy, fairly crude, and not made for extended use. The up side is that they generally are reliable and adequate for an inexpensive defense firearm.

The Springfield Armory, Inc., pistols are much better made, are of the conventional (for .45) locked breech design, and are lighter. There have been reports of quality control problems with SA, Inc., pistols as well as rifles, but they have been spotty, and the company seems to want to improve both quality and customer service.

Some of the attacks on specific gun brands are made by folks who simply have to badmouth any brand other than their own favorite. It has come to an almost "religious war" attitude, either you worship my god (gun) or you are a heretic who should be burned at the stake. What nonsense!

I admit. I badmouth Highpoint pistols. The few that I have any experience with sucked beyond all comprehension. There were no redeeming qualities other than the fact that it was cheap. Mostly I would not want to see somebody try and defend their lives with such a piece of crap. Even if they were in a very tight financial situation and still wanted to be able to defend themselves there are much better options availible.

At the same time I am a dyed in the wool Springfield fan. But then again if your Springfield has something wrong with it, it can probably be fixed. Even the Highpoints that aren't broken still suck. :p

Hi, Correia,

I have never owned a HiPoint, but have shot several of them, though none in .45. They all went bang when I pulled the trigger, which is, after all, the idea. Nice? No. Functional? IMHO, yes.

As to defense, I would prefer one to the proverbial rock throwing.

Jim

Hey Jim. It does beat a pointy stick or rock throwing for defense, but I would much rather buy a Mak or a Tokarov or a used revolver or something, anything.

And I don't consider myself a gun snob. I'm a bargain shopper and I love old crusty military guns. I love Makarovs, some of my favorite rifles are battered Mosin-Nagants and Enfields. I managed to buy quite a few guns when I was in college, even though I was poorer than dirt, mostly by shopping around and looking at cheap surplus guns.

I can't believe I forgot the Mak, alot of nice S&W Victory's in .38
S&W.Ballester Molinas, and a nice one I've been checking out is
a CZ 70 in .32 acp $82 wholesale, looks all steel and smaller than
a PPK.
