Silver Tip Question ...

Does anyone know how much silver is actually in a silver tip bullet? With silver prices soaring, I was wondering if it would be cost effective to have someone exchange a silver tip bullet tip for another tip, such as a full metal jacket ... and then cash in the silver tip.

Perhaps this could not be done, but was just thinking .... hehehehe :D

Respectfully,

I would guess 0% silver.

Silver is too hard to be used for an expanding tip bullet. Its also too soft and expensive to be a good armor percing round.

If you mean the Winchester Silver Tip pistol ammo, there's zero silver.
The .380 version jacket was almost pure aluminum, the others are copper jacketed with a thin silver colored plating over the copper.

 Factory ammo costs enough already without having to pay for silver bullets. Let's see, 20 bullets at, oh, 150 grains is 3000 grains. Almost 1/2 pound or 8 ounces. (I'm not doing troy :D ) at $46/oz about $368 per box plus other components plus manufacturing costs (fixed and variable) etc Let's just round it up to $400 per box just cause it sounds extravagant. :D That's expensive even for the Lone Ranger or vampire bounty hunters or whoever the heck uses silver bullets.

The Oregon Trials Laser Cast "silver" bullets have naturally occuring silver in them and they are really hard. I think Garret Cartridges have silver added to their bullets and they are really hard as well.

I asked that question to a relative of mine who worked for winchester. That was back in the early 60's. His answer was this: The silvertip is made from the same materials that they use for "Silver Solder". And yes.....it is more expensive. At one time, winchester produced a bronze tipped bullet too.

I'm reading this thread with great disappointment. Apparently that ammunition which I have carefully set aside for vampire and werewolf dispatch duty is unsuitable. What's a poor soul to do?

Holy Water from a SuperSoaker is a good option for those who wish to avoid hand to hand fighting with the supernatural. But stock up on wooden stakes and brush up on your sword work just in case.

sc, I'm a bit concerned that I might be setting myself up for criminal and civil liability should I use other than factory loaded ammunition for my fight vs. the supernatural.
