Silver Bear 62 grain HP performance?

I've been looking around at getting some bulk HP .223 and the Silver Bear 62 grain HP load seems like a good buy. Does anyone know how well the HP performance is? I'm not expecting high performance, but I would hope it works better than FMJ.

I used to shoot alot of it for plinking, but I did have a guy at the gun shop say that he uses it for hogs and he says it will take them down no problem.....

As long as it works in your gun fine, go for it. I have heard of others having extraction issues, and have had some trouble with feeding and extraction of Silver/ Golden Bear myself. I suggest buying a box or two to try it out before buying a case.

Silver Bear 62gr HP is my favorite range/plinking ammo. it is 100% reliable in my AR...something that cannot be said for tula/wolf! It is also surprisingly accurate (2.5-3" groups @100 yards) for cheap bulk Russian ammo. I would be interested to see if anyone posts any expansion data for this ammo (or the Silver Bear 62gr soft point).

If I get a chance this weekend (or next) I will pull out the chronograph and post the numbers on Silver Bear 62gr JHP and SP ammo out on my 20" AR.

Not familiar with the .223 HP. But I shoot Silver Bear .308 in my M1A almost exclusivley. Runs fine, consistant and accurate. Good ammo for the price

I got back from the range with the chrony and here are velocities and energy for Silver Bear HP and SP. The figures were taken at ~590' MSL, 68 degrees F and 45% relative humidity.

Silver Bear 62gr HP= 30 shot string average of 2968FPS/1213 ft/lbs

Silver Bear 62gr SP= 30 shot string average of 3074FPS/1301 ft/lbs

I was shocked at the extra velocity of the Silver Bear SP ammo. The downside is that it is marginally less accurate as the HP ammo. The HP ammo groups ~3" at 100 yards shooting off a sand bag vs 4" for the SP ammo. Both types of Silver Bear ammo were 100% reliable today (100 rounds/ bullet type).

I would be very interested to see if anyone has shot the Silver Bear SP into wet newspaper or water filled jugs to see if it expands. This could be a nice low cost ammo to stash for a SHTF situation.

FWIW, I've run the Silver Bear and the Brown Bear 62gr JHPs in my ARs and the Brown Bear seems to be more accurate. Its also a bit less expensive.
