Silly revolver question

I've always had a preference fro automatics and I only own three revolvers (ruger security six and two vaquero's). I never thought I would want a revolver for defense purposes but I was watching a sci fi show called "firefly" and the heroes all use revolvers and lever or pump rifles. The show takes place 500 years in the future and the characters live out in the frontier of space and there are lots of automatics going around (even lasers). I spoke to a prop guy from the show and he told me they use they older weapons because they require less maintenance and upkeep. Now show aside what would be a good all around choice for sidearm as far as revolvers go. I'm looking for all purposes and regular size.

For the "space western" look and feel of the show the prop guys choose old cap and ball revolvers and welded on modern accessories so if you watch it don't be surprised if you see a Lemat with a weaver rail.

If you stop and think about it - it makes perfect sense. Would the remnants of a defeated society/race/spieces use the most modern armanents available? Of course not, those arms are most likely banned/prohibited by their overlords and meanwhile they are either being hunted or just trying to survive in the post-apocalyptic world/society that is forced upon them. So you use what is available and that is usually old and antiquated ordinance - but you adjust and you make it work. The Afganis, using Enfields and Mausers from WWI and WWII, picked the Soviet Army, who were using AK-47's and AK-74's, apart for 10 years before we started sending them more modern arms. ;)

I'll bet the most recommended revolver will be a medium framed, 4 inch barrel, steel framed .357 magnum from one of the major revolver manufactors. You really can't go wrong with any of the choices from the various manufactors.
