Sigpro or Styer???

Hi, I need a little help here. I'm thinking of buying a plastic gun and I've narrowed the choice down to a Sigpro 2340 and the Styer M-40.
Which would you buy and why? Does one offer any real advantage over the other?
No, I don't want a Glock!.....Do I?
Thanks for your help!!

I have the SigPro 2340 .40 and love it and you can also get a .357Sig drop in barrell for it I did and love that too. Dont know if you can do that for the other?? But I would get the Sig!! Just my opinion Good Luck

Well, if you don't want a G23 (and why not?), my second choice would be the SIG and then the Steyr. My $.02, and worth every penny.

10mm: It's not the size of the Dawg in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog!

Ditto on the SIG. Just got a SP 2340 in .40 S&W and it is a nail driver. Right on, right out of the box. Good solid SIG feel too, just a little top heavy compared to something like the P226. There is nothing wrong with my Glock .40, but it just became the spare gun.

My vote goes to the SIG also. I wasn't too impressed with the fit and feel of the Steyr, especially after all the gun rag hype, but I liked the plastic SIG enough that I bought a sig pro SP2340 in .357SIG. The gun really grows on you, it's accurate and fun to shoot, as well as one of the better-looking polymer guns out there. It's probably even sturdier than my Glocks. Also, the sig pro tends to be less expensive than a Glock or the Steyr, and you get a high quality firearm in return.

Well, if you don't want the best polymer framed .40 don't get a Glock.

While I haven't fired either, I've handled them both. I don't care for the grips on either. The Steyr's plastic grips seem like they would be slippery, and I just can't get a good hold on them. The Sig feels a little chunky and the grip panels feel a little spongy (though I love the 229 grips). Finally, I don't think they make hi-caps for either, and since they are both fairly new, finding holsters may be tough, too.

While I would definately recommend the venerable Glock 19/23 series (I have a 23), you would do yourself a serious injustice not to check out the Walther P99. I have one in 9mm, and it holds 16+1 rounds in the available though expensive hi-cap clips, shoots real nice, has adjustable sights and even grips, carry's well, is compact, and has one of the most comfortable grips you'll ever wrap your fingers around. Furthermore, it's endorsed by Q-Branch!

And the New Jersey State Police just went from 9mm HK P7s to S&W/Walther SW99s too, even though over 80% of the officers voted to stay w the HK.

I like the sig pro a lot too, but for some strange reason can only shoot them in 357. Soon as I drop a 40 barrel in em, they don't work. Tried it w 8 different guns, so it's gotta be me...

Don't laugh, but the Ruger polymer guns are very good. P95/9mm, P97/45. NYPD approved the P95.

Why would anybody laugh? I can't understand why the Rugers get no respect, unless it's because the Ruger P-series is neither expensive enough nor foreign enough for snob appeal. They are tough as tanks (the P97 was designed for the 10mm and rebarrelled for .45ACP), feed anything you give them and go bang every time you pull the trigger.

As for Q Branch endorsing Walther, so what? Agent Jane Blue (Kathleen Turner) uses a Ruger P-Series in "Undercover Blues" to fight off the thugs employed by Novacek (who was run out of the Czech Secret Police and turned to stealing defense secrets). I'll bet she could take the current Brioni-fashion-model Bond, though Connery in his prime would be a lot tougher.

Back on topic, I have not shot either SIGPro or Steyr, but I've handled them at a gun show. The SIGPro could use a smaller grip insert, it feels like a 2x4 in my hand. You get the SIG quality at a decent price. The Steyr design is more advanced and the low bore axis will help with follow up shots. Felt better in hand, but I would lose the Star Trek sights and get some tritium Ashleys if possible.

As always the best procedure is to borrow/rent both guns and blow a box of ammo through each before you decide.

PS: If you have not seen Undercover Blues, stop by Blockbuster tonight. You won't regret it. :)

I picked up the first SIGPro I've seen in real life at the gunstore the other day and tried both grips. The smaller spongy grips were so-so. I slipped on the plastic grips and my hand couldn't even fit around them. A person's hands would have to be positively huge to use the plastic grips. I'll stick with the SIG Classic models as far as SIG goes.

Cghammo, you might want to bear in mind that all the above advice is being offered by people without actual experience using both of the guns in question.

I myself own and like a Steyr, but because I haven't fired a Sigpro, I'd be reluctant to cast a vote in the kind of comparison you propose.

A few responses:

BrokenArrow, choosing between a P99 and a P7 is like choosing between a Ferrari and a Lamborghini. If those are the options of the NJ State Police, I feel they are very well armed.

DavidScott: Personally, I prefer the P99 over the Rugers because I find the Ruger grips too thick, and the controls placed a little far. However, if you want a good Ruger auto movie, check out Antonio Banderas and his guitar case in Desperado.

Actually, that should be like choosing between a Mercedes and Porsche, Teutonic origins and all.

If they had to choose between Beretta and Bernadelli, ya woulda been in the right parking lot. :)

I'd vote for the Steyr. It's a bit more advanced in design, and I have studied both guys quite a bit. Both are great choices and you don't have a loser in the group, either one you choose you are well armed.

The SigPro felt a bit plasticy to me, a little bit cheaper than the P series.

Best thing though is to try them out at the range, rent if possible, or find someone that has both and do a side by side shooting test.

Happy shooting.

I've owned and shot both the Steyr M40 and Sigpro. Both are very excellent. The Glocks are also excellent shooters.

One thing that might help you make up your mind is what kind of trigger system you prefer. the Sigpro is da/sa and the Steyr is a short stroke da/fast reset trigger system like Glocks.

2nd thing: Do you want the capability of using an optional manual safety. If yes, then get the Steyr. The new Steyr pistols are top notch.

One more thing: The new Steyr has a lot of advanced technology in it so it easily passes the Mass. State gun laws, etc, if this is an issue for you. Steyr is getting certifed for Mass right now.

The HK USP pistols are also excellent.

You should probably start out by getting one of each :) Take out a loan.

fyi: there's Steyr and Sigpro reviews at www.gunnery.net.

good luck.

I like the Steyr. I like it so much that I might even give up a Glock 27 for an S40. I don't know about the G23 for M40 because I can't get the full caps for the M40. I really like the Steyr pistol. Although I own Sig pistols, soon to be 8, I never developed an attachment to the Pro. That is me, others may not feel that way.
