Sights for M15A4 flattop carbine

I will be buying an Armalite M15A4 carbine for personal defense and plinking. What iron sights and scopes would you recommend? If you had to prioritize buying iron sight or scope, which one would you buy first and why? I am a newbie, so take it easy on the technical language.

I would definitely place the priority on the sites. The armalite rifles are at their heart are still short range combat rifles. Some where around the site we were talking about flat tops vs. carry handles maybe its in the archives...
