Sighting in the 870 deer shotgun

My 12ga. Remington 870 express started out life as a Turkey express with a 21" ( or may have been 20" ) matte finished VR . About 5 months after buying this shotgun I bought a 20" Hastings rifled barrel ( early 1990's, seems like yesterday ), B-square receiver scope mount, weaver rings and a Simmons Pro Diamond 2X32 shotun scope. I tru-oiled the stock and fore end back in the early 1990's also and it was beginning to show. Bought a camo synthetic fore end and a camo synthetic stock, put them on it and now need to resight the shotgun ( OUCH ! ) . Still have 6 boxes left of original Remington 2 3/4" Copper Solids that the Barrel loved last time. My land is different since I last sighted in this shotgun as now I hunt exclusively from tree stands ( 10'-15' ) on steep slope of heavy forest where a long shot would be 100 yards max, but most would be 25-65 yards. Now I guess they have changed the twist since I first bought this barrel for todays sabot, but as I already have sabots that would be moot I guess. I thought maybe 1" low at 50 yards to make up for the up or down slope shooting ? Any Thoughts or Ideas to make this as pleasant a experience as possible ( sighted in with the least amount of shots LOL ) I would like to hear it as I have done nothing with this shotgun but load it, shoot it once or twice ( or 3 times on a lucky season ) for the last 10 years with just a good cleaning ( spray Breakfree and let it hang til dry, did I mention My original express wood stock was showing signs of age LOL ) . Deer season is all I use this shotgun for as I have a couple of 870 20ga for birds/hares and plinking . Just been away from any shotgun forums and You guys know Your 870's. Suprisingly this one has been in all kinds of snow and rain and shows no sign of rust on the receiver, also I did remove the metal stock plate before installing the synthetic stock as I used the search and found that was not used for the syn stocks only the wood ones. Thanks in advance.....WVleo

Agree with Dave, that is how I set up ours, my son and mine, to hunt in area where only shotgun allowed.

You mentioned a B=square mount so I assume you do not have a cantilever mount. As the barrel is separate from the receiver on which the scope is mounted, expect your groups to open up a bit. I had a very similar rig and shrank my 100-yard group size in half by carefully lining the barrel extension with a layer of duck tape , carefully trimmed. The barrel installed a bit snug, point of impact changed considerable but group size went down to about 4 inches at 100 yards.

As today's slug guns and slugs are pushing the effective range to nearly 200 yards or so, I would sight in 3" high at 100 yards. Depending on the gun, this should put you about 1-2" high at 50 yards.

Hello and thanks, OK then I'll sight it in at 2" high at 50 yards. If I get 4" groups at 50 yards it will be excellent for My property as it is thick. Will try in the AM . The 37" Vizio TV carton is shuddering already LOL LOL ! ....WVleo
