Sighting in Slugs

Went to the range on Sunday with my "tactical" 870 with ghost ring MMC sights on it. I wanted to see how well I could do with Brennekes at 50 and 100 yards.

My shoulder is DESTROYED :)

I was doing fairly well at 100, but I honestly don't know how well it is sighted now. My ability to shoot was COMPLETELY destroyed after 40 slugs or so. I couldn't really hold a .22 steady after that!

However, even at my worst, a man sized target could always be hit at 100 yards, and the holes left in the paper (or wood target holder when I started losing it) were BIG!!

I think I would have made an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon before I went out and shot that many slugs.

I'm OK. Just sore.

Next time I go to the range, I think I need to take a few shots with slugs again just to see where I left it. The left right windage was good, all I was messing with was the elevation. But I was so shell shocked at the end, I had no consistency. I was all over the place.

However, I will do this at the END of the session!

kurgen99,

The best way to beat the recoil affect from the slugs is to use a Recoil Shield (there are other brands available too) on your shoulder and an orange shotgun. Felt recoil is virtually zero. :D

If that won't do it for you, then skip the orange shotgun and just go with the Recoil Shield. They really do take the bite out of slugs and buckshot. I used one at my last 4 day shotgun course.....were we shot hundreds of rounds of slugs, buck, and bird shot. Never even had an ache.

So we have a braggart in our midst:D the thread reminds me of the guy that says "My car got blocked in by some idiot so I picked up the front end and swung it out into the open and now I have a little back ache...":D Were these 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells? Even with the shorter shell, 40 in an afternoon is more than I would be comfortable with.

The lesson here is to not let your self get fatigued. I'll shoot no more than ten of anything with that kind of recoil. I know I can do more, but I don't want to be that sore or develop any bad habits as a result.

40 slugs in a row? wow. Can you tell us about the bullet drop @ 50 & 100 yards? I have some brenneke & federal hollow point slugs lying around with me but I don't get to shoot often. Would appreciate if you could shed some light on it. Thanks

Sorry, I didn't know I was bragging.

Bullet drop. Hmm. Well, I'm not sure if I can help. By the end I was so shell shocked that I was shooting all over the place. And I had adjusted, re-adjusted and un-adjusted my sights.

It seemed to be far greater than the 1.5 " rating on the Brenneke box. 50 yards you can hold a decent pattern. 100 get's a little more spread out.

If you arizona's advice and got a recoil pad, you might be able to really accomplish what I was trying to do.

I need to go back and shoot a couple of rounds at 50 and 100 to see what I did.

Sorry, I didn't know I was bragging.
I was jist messin' with ya'... 40 is far more than i would attempt though.

That is exactly the honest reply I hoped you would post!;):D

I think I will get one of those Recoil Shields. I'm not done with this little project.

This is my main go to gun, so I'd like to be a bit more familiar with it. My other Remy is an auto 1187, so I don't have a ton of experience with pumps yet.

Shooting slugs was far cheaper then shooting my M1A as well.

There is the Past Recoil Shield which I've used and is very good and a new one on the market called McCoys Superior that I've been told is very good...

Does your shotgun have a recoil pad on it? It sounds as if it doesn't and by putting on a LimbSaver (my favourite), KickEeze, Pachmayr etc. will make the world of difference...Even if you just got a slip on one it will help...

When sighting in the big bores, like the .470 NE, the regulators (where the barrel shoot to) will use a standing bench, so they can move with the recoil and will put a 10 lb bag of very fine bird shot (8, 9, 12) on their shoulder to help cushion the blow...It works great even when sitting at the bench...

IIRC you sight in for 2¾" high at 50 yds = zero @ 100 yds

To really improve accuracy, get a screw on rifling choke tube and shoot proper slugs...

That is exactly the honest reply I hoped you would post!

Yes, as opposed to...

"Here is a picture of my target after I was done, seven shots through each hole. I would've been more accurate of course, but I had to get my sights adjusted while mortars were exploding all around me."

Sighting in a slug gun:

 Wow, 40 rounds of .12 GA slug will wear anybody out...

I know, been there, done that. However, my friend suggested I look into buying a Caldwell Lead Sled. I did and finally purchased one. Without a doubt, that was the best decision I have ever made in a long time regarding gun accessories. Loaded the sled down with two 25 lb. bags of lead. Then took my Model 870 and some Lightfield Hybrid .12 GA slugs out to the range for a day of slug gun shooting. Had a blast and no sore shoulder whatsoever. Plus I ended up zeroing my new Zeiss scope on the Hastings fully rifled slug barrel in short order and the tightest group I have ever shot with slug ammo. Look into a lead sled, you won't be sorry I promise...

40 rounds:eek:, hell you are crazy. I hate the recoil shield thing but it works for some just not for me. I put 20 slugs threw my 870 today and my shoulder is out of commission. Now even 7 years ago when I would shoot alot, m16, m590a1, and M9 I could handle 40 rounds in one sitting, but I was accustomed. Your a beast.:D

LOL!

I didn't realize that it was THAT crazy.

The bad thing was that I couldn't shoot anything else well during the session. I have to back (or go indoor) to get some confidence back with my 1911.

I took a box of 15 winchester x 3inch mag slugs with me to the range 2 weeks ago and it took 3 people to fire them all.I have mine sighted in using a red sight, after 5 rounds i handed the gun off.I haven't put 40 slugs through mine since i bought it 3 years ago and thats with a rifle slug barrel and porting.

I was talking to a guy on this board telling me he was getting 2-3" groups at 60yrds offhand regularly with Winchester slugs and I just had to laugh!

Anyway, get yourself a Pachmayr Decelerator slip on and your shoulder will thank you.

I think you are talking of me...
I see nothing laughable about a fairly decent repeatable group... Laughable is wider groups.
I consider all 6 in a pie plate size group to be just barely passable... wider than that and you have no reason even hunting. Please don't bring a gun to bear on game critters if you are inept.

Just to clear things up... I wasn't getting those barely acceptable groups with winchester or federal slugs from my smooth bore cyl barrel 20 gauge in the first 10 years... takes time and lead down range. It doesn't just happen.
If you want to see those 60 yard groups, and yer ever in the florida panhandle, just stop on in... We can drink a beer afterwards...

Keep doing that, and your ortho doc is going to be buying a new Mercedes. Remember, recoil damage effect is cumulative over time - it only gets worse, not better. Don't push it, or you'll regret it down the road......I know
