Sight Preference - 3 Dot vs. Bar/Dot

I have been shooting for many years - with several sight configurations on many different pistols. I find that I prefer the 3-dot system.

My personal choice of handgun is the SIG Sauer "P" series of pistols - and most all SIGs come equipped with the bar/dot standard SIG combat sight.

What type of sights to you prefer, and why? Comments?

I like the 3 dot system, but thats just what I have the most experience with. The U rear sight picture (Glocks and S&W revolvers) is ok. I thought Sigs bar-dot was ok, but wasn't as natural for me. I plan on sticking to the 3 dot as much as possible for my CCW or competition guns. LAter.

I changed both my Sig Classic Series pistols to three dot Meprolight night sights mainly because the bar dot just didn't work for me.

I like the giant triangle on the front site of my Steyr M40, it stands out so much it is very quick to pickup when doing faster paced shooting.

I like the Sig Bar-Dot set up best. I find it provides a good balance between fast and precise aiming. I prefer plain black sites over three dot set ups, with Glock's Dot-U in the middle somewhere. Steyr's Triangle-Bars was fast, but not too precise.

no dots, line up the post to the notch, make them level with equal amounts of light on each side and shoot. I find that anything on the back of the site takes my eyes attention. I'm referring specifically to the sites on my Kimber. There is a real interesting article on this subject at sportshooter.com. Check it out.

Bar-Dot by a big margin. Didn't know that though, until I got my first Kahr pistol. I am able to shoot much more quickly while still maintaining accuracy, and keep both eyes open without too much confusion. The problem is that finding good Tritium sights in that configuration are impossible.

I want the same setup for all my pistols, for consistency sake. But the closest you can get for an HK (that I've found) is the Ashley Express, which isn't exactly what I'm looking for.

3-Dot is my choice. Works well in a variety of situations from sunlight, indoor range lighting, to dim light, to dark & having to use a secondary light source to help illuminate area ;)

I seem to pick up bar-dots slightly faster. This despite the fact that I have more experience with and own more three-dots.

Focus on...

The sight outline, not the dot. I have three dot, bar dot, etc. I really am starting to like a Tritium dot sight up front and a plain rear. Unless you have different colored tritium sights in rear, lining up a three dot night sight could be difficult. Bar dot is nice as the eye tends to line up things vertically quickly, and there is no confusion regarding front sight/rear sight. The same can be said for a single dot/tritium up front, and a plain rear sight. Probably more durable, and less expensive when it comes to replacement.

Having good luck with Heinie Straight 8

My wife bought a set of Heinie Straight 8s for my birthday. It didn't take long to get used to them and I find them easy to pick up, get on target and fast when shooting multiple targets. I often shoot better groups with a three dot configuration but I'm noticeably faster with this two dot system. Since this is a carry gun, that is a valued consideration.

Personally, I think all three systems are satisfactorily functional with practice.
Just my opinion, Jack
