I bought still wrapped in the plastic used unfired a Sigarms GSR 1911 made in 2004.serial number GS01439. Paid 500.00 for it

Is this on of the trouble some models i have heard about ?

Is everyone from this year of production bad ?

Thanks for any info

I hope it works out for you but as a used pistol you will have no warranty on it.

I read a while back that someone who owned an early GSR 1911 lost the "manhole cover" and was informed by SIG they had no replacement.

Mine was bought in 2009 for $740 new by me with a 16xxx serial number post manhole cover and has worked wonderfully for me but I probably only have 750 rounds through it but it scratched my 1911 itch.

The real issue is that if it does not run Sig will not have any parts available to fix it. The original GSRs were made with very nice components. Storm Lake barrels, Caspian frames etc... When they ran they were excellent accurate tack drivers. The problem was that it tons of them did not run well and Sig did not have the 1911 expertise to make them run properly. They had parts assemblers not 1911 smiths.

I'm sure it will be fine. At worst you have some fantastic parts that can be tuned by a competent 1911 smith. There are only a couple of proprietary parts in the GSR and replacements are available from EGW.

I have to be honest, the more I see threads like this the more confused I am. Person buys firearm. After person buys firearm he/she asks if that firearm is a good firearm or a bad firearm. You already bought it. Test it and find out. If it is a problem firearm hopefully you can find a smith that will help make it work.

The problem with the GSR's weren't that a ton of them were bad; it was that a few were bad. Those few were so bad as to make people wonder how they even got off the line.

I'd let someone who knows the platform give it a once-over. Unless there's some glaring defect, it should be fine.

I disagree to an extent with this. There was a pretty large number of problem guns when you compare it to the rest of the Sig product line at the time or even other 1911 manufacturers of the time.

The failures were definitely exacerbated by the fact many of the defective guns Sig never could get running. I remember at the time many went back to the factory multiple times.

The Gen 1 I had run great and was a tack driver until the extractor pin walked out and I had to send it back in to get it repaired. At the time no one else made parts for the gun and Sig would not send you parts so once it was repaired I test functioned it and then sold it off to fund a Dan Wesson CBOB and never looked back.

I bought the gun not knowing of problems. Hell it was a Sig.. Sig has a goid reputation so i bought it. I did research after words and seen all the problems of cracked frames and such and did not know what the serial number range of the problematic guns. So I ask here.
Was it just a few or alot of them.
Being this is the first Sig i have ever owned i just wanted to know
