SIG v Glock Hand Size Question

I've never been measured for gloves, so I don't have a clue about my handsize. What I do know is that every Glock I've rented has been very hard to for to control- it feels like it's trying to twist out of my hand. I've rented two of the .40's, and one .357 SIG. On the other hand, I rented a SIG 239 several times, and it fete my hand very well.

Can I extrapolte from this? Does this likely mean that I have pretty small hands? A lot of people say that the SIG 239 has too small of a grip. Is the deal the the SIG 239 has a small grip and I have small hands, so it fits, where the Glock fits better for people with larger hands?

Is there some standard way to measure hand size?

Thanks,

Mike P. Wagner

There are small, medium and large hands. Which ever group you fall into, you will not agree with all others of like handedness as to which grip frame is the best for you. I think I fall into the small hands group and I can tell you that the traditional Glocks tend to be wide in the grip for me. They are hellacious firearms but do not fit my grip. Now here is the catcher. I have small hands and dont like the feel of Glocks. My best friend has hands of equal size and loves the fit of his G21 and will not carry anything else. Lets cut to the chase. What you need to do is find a friend with a variety of handguns that you can try or go to a public range that rents a variety of pistols and see what fits you. What I found is that the HK USP fit me best. While they are thick in the grip and rather large even in their compact versions, all the controls are readily accessable and the grip is not so wide that I cannot get a frim and reliable hold on them. While I won't say that fit is totally subjective, I will say that it varies from person to person and that you need to try at least a few befor you find what works for you. Where are you located. I am sure that if any members of this board are near to you that we would let you try what pistols are at our disposal. If you live in Northern UT I have a few you could test drive.

"There are small, medium and large hands."

You, clearly, never met Bill Jordan (gun writer, not camo maker). :D

As to hand size vs. gun fit. It is all a matter of comfort. I can comfortably handle even the large frame Glocks but I have trouble with the double stack Sigs. The de-cocker and trigger reach are just not very ergonomic for me. The single stack P225 is a much better fit and I would be comfortable with it.

Buy the one that's comfortable... FWIW.

Mike, if you like the .40, trying renting a heavier gun and see if that makes a difference. I have large hands and I, too, have trouble with the .40/.357 in Glocks; I experienced exactly what you describe. Have you tried 9mm Glocks?

On the other hand, no pun intended, I love the .40 in my Browning HP; for me, the extra weight of the frame drastically increased shootability.

My hands are small. Ring size (7.5) is often a gauge coupled with measuring from the middle finger to the wrist (7").

I could not stand Glocks until they redid their frames with those finger indentations and thumb rests. Now a G19 fits me like a "glove" with the pad of my index finger fitting right on the trigger. Two hand purchases really work with a G17.

I can't do:

Ruger's
Big Sigs
Beretta 92's
HK's
Most M1911's

I love:

Glock 9mm (except the G26)
Kahrs
Hi Powers

Shoot what fits you like you would wear a glove.

The Beretta 92 feels like I'm holding a 2"x2". I hate it. Even my 92FS Type M feels too fat. A SIG 225 and Walther P99 fits my hand perfectly. A S&W Model 39 feels great. And the classic 1911 fits everybody's hand. What a great design!

I have large hands, size 20 ring, and I love my glocks except my wife's 27, and my hi power. never had much problem with autos but some revolverws are way too small in the grip area. I can't hold on to a ruger blackhawk unless the grips are replaced, cuz I only have 2 and part of another finger around the grip. you guys with small hands rejoice cuz you can shoot them tiny guns like a 25 auto and such....
