Hey TFL,

I just wanted to get a general consensus on the comparison of these two guns. Both chambered in 9mm, both are polymer. One da/sa, one striker-fired. About a $100 price gap between the two from what I have seen. What are the pros/cons you associate with each, and which would you choose as a first handgun?

Thanks in advance.

From personal experience, they are both solid, reliable firearms. In choosing between the two, I think it should come down to: (1) Which platform you prefer (DA/SA vs striker) and (2) Which feels best in your hand.

Personally, I prefer striker fired pistols. However I do have a single DA/SA pistol and it happens to be a 2022. :)

Hi Jacket67,

What is your intended purpose for the gun? I really don't care for DA/SA anymore even though my first gun. While the single action is great, the double action first shot makes it harder to shoot accurately on the first shot. I know that can be overcome with practice, but are you willing to put in the time. I switched to carrying a Glock 26 from my Sig P228. While the smaller size was a huge plus, the consistent trigger pull from shot to shot was what pushed me over to the dark side.

I suggest you find a range to test the guns to confirm your decision. At a bare minimum, handle both and ask if you can dry fire them. I did not care for the Springfield trigger and ended up selling my XDs in .45. I carry a Glock 43 with the Ghost Pro trigger. I am pretty happy with it and shoot pretty well with it. I carried a Kahr PM9 for a long time, but after trying someone else's Glock 43, I decided to switch. The long pull of the PM9 made longer range shots more difficult to shoot accurately.

Just curious, why are you only considering those 2 guns you listed?

I've narrowed it down from a large list to these two. I've actually posted a lot of separate posts related to me choosing my first handgun. These two are my top choices because I shot and loved the sig p229 (and the 2022 is a more affordable, polymer version), and I really like the practicality of the xdm compact with the 13 and 19 round mags. I agree that a consistent trigger pull is great, but I am not at all deterred by da/sa guns as I loved the sig and was taught to shoot on a Beretta 92f. Love that gun too, but just not what I need right now.

I'm looking for a reliable polymer handgun that can do HD/carry, with HD being it's main purpose right now. I'm a college student so I won't be carrying all that often. I like glock too, but not so much that I want one right now. So I'm between the sig and xdm. I plan on renting an xdm soon to see if I like it as much as I think I do.

I have a Sig 2022 40cal and a XDS 45 4.0 so it's apples to oranges. I like both guns for different reasons. Both have good triggers but very different. Both are extremely reliable. The 2022 is my home defence, woods and truck gun. My XDS is one of my carry guns. Both are great guns for obviously different reasons.

Jacket67,

Well, if you have gone through a bunch of other guns, then I suggest you really try them both at a range. I hate to add a wrinkle to your decision making process, but have you considered the Walther PPQ? I got one for my little sis and she loves the gun. It has one of the best triggers for a striker fired gun. The ergonomics are phenomenal, especially with the swappable grip adapters. They are fully ambidextrous and can be found on gunbroker.com for around $500.

If you do intend to carry at all, be sure to buy something you can conceal or else you will find yourself shelling our more money soon to buy a carry gun. Giid luck!

I own a 9mm SP2022 and it's older brother the SP2340 in .40. Both polymer framed pistols are superb pistols and truly deserve the SIG name.

My 2022 shoots as well as either my P226 or P228 even though the DA trigger pull is a bit longer. The 2022 carries easily IWB in a Theis holster.

One last thing, internet rumor is that Bruce Gray (one of the world's finest Sig pistolsmiths) carries the 2022.

I chose the XDM as my first handgun, but with a few exceptions and addendums. first, I chose the XDM45 full sized when they first came out. I had no idea what I was doing, and I was horrible with it until I got some good training. I have since owned several XDs, XDMs, and XD-s, of various size and calibers and still own one XDM 3.8 compact. I also own the SP2022. the XDM is the better firearm in my opinion in many respects, especially if comparing 9mm to 9mm. the XDM is smaller in every dimension which equals more concealment, if you want to go that route. the XDM has a single uniform trigger pull. the xdm has a much simpler takedown system. the XDM has higher ammo cap when using the grip extensions and full sized mags. The SP2022 does have better sights, and the grip replacement expands the sides as well as the rear but whereas the XDM only makes the back of the grip deeper, but both methods are effective at adjusting to your needs, however the grip on the SP2022 is much smaller to begin with so if you're a bit mitted boy, you may not fair too well. both are extremely accurate, and boringly reliable. you really cant go wrong with either, but my nod goes to the XDM.

Full disclosure: I own an xdm 3.8 compact 9mm, and I love it. I got it because:
- I shoot it well
- The trigger works well for me
- I love the ability to conceal with 13+1
- I love being prepared to defend my home with 20+1 by switching to the extended mag.
- It is accurate enough to hit from 25 yds despite the 'shorter' barrel
- It is put together well with S.A. quality
- The gear that comes with the gun is awesome, especially now with the gear promo (4 mags? Yes please!)
- I LIKE the grip safety. I have never had issues with actuating it during classes or at the range. It adds a level of safety, flips my flipper.
