I'm new to this forum and new to firearms in general. Currently own an HK USP45/f, will like an 870 or nova to complete the set. But now looking for a reliable/accurate targeting bolt-rifle for the range and possible hunting in the future. Since I'm still in college (working p/t), I'm a little tight on $. That didn't preclude my passion for guns. Now trying to decide between 970 ,whitetail, or 700 as my graduation treat, hope my wife will not complain. Reason I'm choosing between these three is due to all your valuable comments in previous threads. They all seem to be exceptional value!? $400-$500, right?
I don't think I will ever take up reloading, so .308 will be my choice. (cheap practice, accurate, good for hunting deers!!) As for scope, I want the best!! Nikon or Leupold? I've heard that they are both excellent. $250-$350? Some said that Nikon is just as good as Leupold and a little easier on $. comments?
Comments will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

What a success for my first post!! I'm guessing that the thread title is not shocking enough. I'll remember to put something like "REMINGTON RUBBISH, SIG SUCKS, and TIKKA TRASH!!" next time. Or maybe nobody thinks that their 700's the best??

I don't owm all 3 rifles, but my last purchase was a Tikka Whitetail in 7mm Mag. It was much nicer out of the box than the Savage or Ruger I owned or still own. The Savage had a horrible finish and kicked worse than the Tikka and it was a 270! The Ruger is a nice gun, shoots about MOA in 308 but had the worst trigger on earth. I figured that the trigger job cost about what a base and rings would cost, so I came out even. The Tikka was bought on sale 1 1/2 years ago at a Bass Pro Shop for $329. Great deal! It's the finest rifle I own. Great trigger, and shoots better than I do. I had a tough time getting rings for it, but that's changed now from what I read on several boards. As far as scopes go, I would not get a Nikon, great optics, horrible service. The Leupold VariX II is too old a design. A VariX III would be great, but they are very expensive. I shoot a B&L 4200 and a Pentax Lightseeker. I'm not trying to start a flame war, only giving you MHO.

I don't hunt deer, but I do a lot of rifle shooting at targets and do a substantial amount of crowbusting. I have a Rem. 700 VS in .223 and a Rem. VLS in .243. I would have bought the Tikka Continental in .243, instead of the Rem., but Tikka didn't import the .243 in the Continental when I wanted one. (Don't know if they're available now, or not.)

If you want a heavy barrel varmint/target rifle, the Rem. 700 VS is a great rifle. Free-floated barrel, H-S Precision stock with aluminum bedding block. Easily-adjustable trigger.

On the other hand, if you might hunt deer and you don't have to shoot 1/4" groups, but are happy with 1/2" groups, you can't beat the Whitetail Hunter. Free-floated barrel, great, adjustable trigger, detachable mag.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm somewhat leaning toward the Tikka. The problem with BassProShop is that they will not do any shipping of firearms, they only take walk-ins. Any suggestion on another online store w/good price?

Walter,
The 700 vs is actually out of my shooting range, their MSRP is over $800. I was actually thinking about the 700BDL. How will this compare to the others?

DT: The MSRP is a joke. Nobody pays anywhere close to that for Rems. I paid $479 for mine, four or five years ago. They're available now for under $600. You can get a VLS for just over $500. Unless you want a heavy barrel, however, you'll not do better than a Tikka Whitetail Hunter. I don't know about online shopping, but you might try Franklin's of Athens. Ask to speak to Mark Franklin, the owner. He'll ship to your local FFL for next-to-nothing, and has always offered me really great prices. I'm pretty sure that he carries Tikkas, but if he doesn't have them in stock, he can get them pretty quickly. Franklin's is a really large gun dealer and offers lots of selection, usually. http://www.franklinsofathens.com/

Hey DT

Try checking http://www.ktpguns.com. This will allow you to search the Kittery Trading Post's, (Probably the biggest gun dealer in the Northeast), inventory of used rifles. Their search function is easy to use. Check often as they update the inventory daily. I have purchased 3 used rifles from them in the past, (Not by mailorder as they are only 2 hours away), and have been very pleased. They also offer a return policy which is nice.
You may find a real bargain it's worth a look.

DT, I was in Wal-Mart this very day and they had Remington 700 ADL (the low-cost one with polymer stock) for $369.

I paid about $400 for my Rem 700 ADL in .308 and have been happy. Shoots MOA out of the box, with some loads (mostly 180gr). Trigger is a bit heavy, but I'll get around to fixing that.

Hey, thanks guys! its been very helpful, especially the sites. I've been to several sporting goods stores, but never thought of walmart.

I'll definitely post an update when dreams are fulfilled.:D

Hello, Everybody!

--well, looks like no one has spoken up for the SHR-970, so...

I have a synthetic in .308. It's been sitting here doing nothing for quite some time because I haven't had a chance to check the rings (to lap or not lap) before mounting the scope. I've no idea how well the rifle shoots, although I found some very interesting comments in the archive. Do a search using keywords "shr" and/or "970"

Keep in mind that I'm totally new to long guns --the 970 was my first. I definitely like the way it "feels" and "fits."

You won't beat the Sako for value or accuracy.
The Nikon is a fine scope. I have a 3x9x40 on my Sako .338 Win Mag. It's very well made, clear, and bright.
If I were to buy a rifle and scope tomorrow, it would be a Sako with a Nikon scope.
My $.02.
