Took out my new Sig Sauer 1911 Scorpion for the first time today. I picked it up brand new for $777.00 out the door!
I also brought along my coveted Dan Wesson Valor.
I used 4 different types of factory loaded 230gr fmj brass cased ammo. I also used 20 rounds of Hornady Critical Duty. I fired 162 rounds from the Sig, 12 were Critical Duty. I fired 108 from the Dan, 8 were Critical Duty. I fired the Critical Duty last from both guns using Trip Research Cobra mags, and they functioned flawlessly in both guns; they are +P rated loaded with 220 gr FlexLock bullets advertised at 975 fps, they had a nice kick! All of my shooting described bellow was with the fmj factory ammo and I didn't notice any difference between the 4 types.
First up, the Scorpion! I loaded the two 8 round factory mags that came with it. I fired my first 8 shots slow, standing, and unsupported at 8 yards. I'll include some target pics in the next post. Both mags ran well, no problems. I think I fully loaded each a couple more times and they always ran reliably with a mix of factory 230gr fmj ammo.
Then I started using my nice new Cobra mags. I felt like they caused the cartridges to experience more resistance during chambering and normal cycling. I made it through the rest of the rounds fired from the Sig with only one round needing just a tad bit of a push on the back of the slide to chamber with the Cobra mags. There was one other time it hesitated to chamber but still got there on it's own with the Cobra mags.
I was very happy with the Scorpion. I cleaned and lubed it with Slip 2000 EWL the night before, the fit and finish was very nice. The gun is tight and feels good. I did not find the grips to be too aggressive (just right in fact) and the extra funneling effect from the flared mag well which is integrated as part of the grips was perfect and really helped with smooth reloads. The ambi thumb safety was great, I liked its smaller size and it was slick, smooth, and crisp. I enjoyed the trigger! I did not mind the flat face at all. The groves on the trigger face gave me the perception that they were a bit aggressive, but I think that was a result of the heavier trigger as they seem to be about the same as what's on the Valor. The trigger on the Scorpion was crisp and felt like any other quality 1911, but it was heavier than I would prefer especially when switching a few times between the guns. It also had the slightest amount of slip right before the break, almost unnoticeable . If I had spent all my time with the Scorpion I'm sure I would have felt better about the trigger weight... I was a bit spoiled with the Valor in hand. I still shot the Scorpion well. I liked the factory 3 dot night sights. The rail for lights and lasers is real neat, although I'll probably never use it despite it being one of the reasons I bought the gun.
Overall I am extremely pleased with the Sig. It preformed very well with essentially 0 malfunctions. I like it's styling, it's features, and feel. Also it's got a bit of an extended magazine release that I found to be perfect in every way.
I shot a 77 round group at 7 yards with the Sig, some shots taken as two within one second, others were much slower, but I tried to keep up a good pace with that group, all standing and unsupported.
Next up was the Valor.
I fully loaded 3 Cobra mags. First round got jammed driving straight onto the slight ramp that's built into the frame but not turning up into the camber, nor doing a nose dive. I dropped the mag, saw that the bullet had been pushed back into the case a bit, I set that round aside, inserted the same mag with 7 rounds left, used the slide release again, and again, same malfunction, I tried it 3 more times even racking the slide back by hand to chamber with the same malfunction. I tried the next loaded mag, same malfunction 3 times, gave up on it. Tried the third mag and if I recall, it worked, although I could feel the resistance. Eventually I got through all of my Cobra mags including the first 3 with no more problems from the Valor, but you could really feel the resistance upon initial chambering. I forgot to try the Sig mags in the Valor.
otherwise the Valor was great! I shot a good 8 shot group at 7 yards standing unsupported. I really love the feel of the Valor. The action, trigger, finish, and feel of the gun are all noticeably cleaner and smoother than the Sig, although the Sig's no slouch. The trigger feels like it is 2/3 the weight of the Sig and a bit cleaner with a more predictable break. I also prefer the straight 8 night sights on the Valor. The Valor looks great with it's classic styling and new grips. I may have to try Wilson combat mags with the Valor and see if it likes them better. I think I will ultimately favor the Valor over the Scorpion. The Scorpion may inherit these pricy Trip Research Cobra mags.
I paid around $1880 out the door for the Valor, the black finish was an optional factory upgrade that resulted in a considerable increase in price ($300?). But I do like it and the gun is very well made, precision machined and hand fitted before the application of the black coating and again after. It's made with top of the line parts and materials.
For the price of $777 out the door, I am EXTREMELY satisfied with my new Scorpion!!! I can only assume that it will continue to be reliable, and may become more so as it smooths out down the road
I hope you all enjoyed the review. I'd be happy to answer any questions.
As a side note, I just ordered a Bianchi M12 holster made from ballistic nylon for the Scorpion in hopes of maintaining it's nice finish.
