Sig Sauer P230

I bought this small and cheap ($ 490) Sig Sauer P230 to add to my Lausanne, Vaud police accumulation (I already have a P220 and a S&W 39-2 which are police surplus). The particularity being the caliber, 9X18 police or ultra.

Tosetti might be the name of the inspector who received the gun originally

The test target is dated June 19, 1980 and shows only three shots at only 10 m

The SV in the shield at the right of the serial number is for “Sureté Vaudoise”, i.e. Security police of the Vaud state

10 shots at 25 meters, the gun is quite accurate considering it’s size

Mine is a well-used example but shoots fine. It is one of three 9x18 Police pistols in my collection, the others being a Walther PP Super and a Renato Gamba Mauser HSc-80. The fourth production 9x18 was the Benelli B-82. Of my three I would say the Walther is the best shooter.

Wow impressive, don’t hesitate to post pictures of them here

Wood grips for the police, WE only got plastic.

Even the ammo makers get it wrong, the 9mm Police is not the same as the pre-war 9mm Ultra. See chart of case dimensions at
https://www.makarov.com/graphics/9mmcases.jpg

The 1936 Ultra is a lengthened 9mm Kurz, while the 1976 Police is a novel design, a slightly shrunken 9mm P.

Walther was always ready to whip out something different for a government order.

Congrats on a great rare find. Beautiful Sig. Another odd caliber Sig used for police issue contracts is .32 acp. They made a limited number of these which are notable not only for the caliber but the addition of a safety and lanyard attachment at the base. Uses the same mags as the .380 models but holds eight rounds instead of the usual seven. The case included three magazines, all with the older metal followers. Beautiful guns. One of my all-time favorites.

something new

Well, check a new box! I had never heard either of the 9mm-Police or the 9mm Ultra and certainly was not aware that the P230 was chambered for the Police ctg.

I do have high regard for the P230.

Yes, over runs from a Tokyo Police contract. As I understand it they were ready to retire the 230 on favor of the 232 when the request came from Tokyo for 230s with those two modifications, lanyard and manual safety. They manufactured additional ones, hence the overruns, thinking they might find some other law-enforcement buyers… they didn’t. Here’s mine.

The Mauser and SIG were worked hard. The Walther not so much.

Very nice. I have the .380 in stainless. It is very accurate.Don't let the slide bite you when it cycles. It will take a plug of hide off.
