Sig P228 questions...

For the past year or so I've had somewhat of a love-hate relationship with my first classic series Sig: a german P228. My main gripe was really just the trigger reach in double action as I have fairly small hands. So this last week I took the plunge and installed a short reach trigger and the E2 grip kit. Boy did that make a world of difference!

Today was my first chance to hit the range. Somewhat disappointingly, I had quite a few light strikes. Would this be owing to a weak mainspring? I know that I should have replaced it while I had it apart, but didn't have one on hand and was anxious to get it to the range.

Also, where can I find a P228 recoil spring? Is it the same as a P229 spring?

Thanks

Any actual P228 you buy now is used. They don't make them anymore; just the M11A1.

You can get springs via Top Gun Supply. You should definitely replace the hammer strut spring, the recoil spring, and the firing pin spring, as all three are likely at or past their lifecycles.

A P228, or any P-series with stock/fresh springs, shouldn't produce light strikes on anything but the hardest of primers. Even then, that is probably an indication that it is time for some replacement springs.

Did you replace any springs? I had to install a new main spring and trigger bar spring when I installed E2 grips on my P228.

I am assuming you used the P229 E2 Grip Kit since there is not one for a P228. WyMark is correct. SIGs that came with the old style long mainspring with the metal seat, which I am pretty sure German P228s did, then you need the new mainspring, part number 34280454. You also need the new trigger bar spring with the coil in the middle.

Yes, I replaced the trigger bar spring with the newer coiled one. My P228 had the longer plastic mainspring seat, not the older metal style. So I think I do have the correct mainspring currently installed. I went ahead and ordered the new springs, so I'll be able to compare them here soon.

Also a question on the trigger pull. Both double and single action trigger pulls feel lighter ( sign of weak mainspring?) than before the E2 conversion. I don't suppose that there's any way to maintain a lighter trigger pull without dealing with light strikes, is there?

Sure it's just a matter of finding the right weight spring. It's a balancing act that just requires some trial and error. Different companies, like Wolff, sell spring kits where you can play around with it if you want.
