Sig P226

My dad purchased a P226 in 1990. The pistol is still in the box and has only been fired once and that was the factory test round. This may seem silly but if the firarm has not been fired would that give it a greater chance for malfunction in the future? i am going crazy cause my pops won't let me take it to the range and use this beautiful piece metal. Should I treat the firearm against rust? I do not forsee my dad giving in and letting me fire it anytime soon but I want to insure that when he does say go ahead and take it...that it will operate.

It should be cleaned periodically (US military says once a month) and oiled.

As long as it hasn't rusted solid, laying around won't bother it a bit. Guns don't atrophy.

Chylin,

Poor 226 :( That gun needs to get out and run! However, if you or your father are not going to shoot it anytime soon, a light coat of oil on as many moving parts and surface area as possible wouldn't hurt. This includes the barrel, but run a dry patch down the tube before it is shot.

Hope this helps,
Jim
