Sig P226 vs. HK USP .40SW

I'm probably going to purchase a P226 soon. The one that came is second place was the HK USP. Are there any differences which should make me reconsider or feel confident (durability, accuracy reliability..)?. This will not be for carry...just home, range, etc. Thanks! TCW

Can't go wrong with either. I own both. The HK fits my hand slightly better and therefore seems more ergonomic as far as using the slide release and decocker.

Thes 2 pistols are so exceptional I suggest you try to shoot, or at the very least handle them side by side. Choose the one that fits you the best.

Or, by both... ;)

NRA? Good. Now joing the GOA!

I'm trying to make a similar decision (see the thread listed "Best Polymer .40 cal") and after extensive study have come down more in favor of the USP.

I got the opportunity to shoot the USP at the range the other day and put 8 rounds into a 1 inch group (four through the same hole) at 10 yards. I normally don't get my groups that tight.

I loved the accuracy, the frame mounted manual safety that also includes the decocker function, and the 20lpi checkering on the grips. I still want a Sig (and a Glock, and a...) but not until I get a USP.

Greetings Poster's; Tough choice, as I too own both. My Sig P226 is two-tone with Sig
Lite night sight's and in 9m/m; my H&K USP
is the full size version in .45ACP. :) I do
tend to favor the Sig; as I have four of
these high quality weapons: 220, 226, 228,
and the 229. :D You can't go wrong with either
one!!!

Both are among the finest handguns available. Both are extremely accurate. It is very easy to get high cap mags (holding as many as 18 rounds) for the Sig 226. On the other hand, the Sig does not have a safety, and may be the subject to silly upcoming laws that disallow guns without safety mechanisms --- a potential problem if you plan on eventually moving to a more anti-gun state. The trigger on the Sig is a gun industry standard, whereas the one on the USP may require a trigger job. You really should get both, but if I had to buy one now, I think I would go with the Sig and stock up on hi-caps.

SIG Sauers do have safeties. As you pull the trigger an internal safety is released making firing possible. If you were to drop one on a cocked hammer it wouldn't fire because of the trigger operated safety.

I prefer SIG Sauers because IMHO the trigger pulls are smoother, they balance better, fit my hand like gloves, and are very accurate. Only you can decide what works best for you.

So many pistols, so little money.

Just on disassembly/re-assembly alone, the SIG is very easy. The HK is not too bad to disassemble but there is a very weird thing (I forgot the exact one since I was cleaning a friend's HK for him) to have to put the pistol back together.

As others have stated, you can't go wrong with either. One advantage I'll give the Sig is that some people on Sig-L mailing list use Sig 226 9mm hicaps to hold 12rounds of .40 in their .40 Sig 226's. I haven't tried it myself since my 226 is 9mm but I've heard from several people that it works. Sig 226 hicaps can still be found in the $40 range if you look around.
