SIG P226 Identity

I saw a SIG P226 at the gun range the other day, and I'm trying to figure out what kind it was.

It was not black or two-tone. The coloring on it looked pretty uniform--a silverish grey color.

It had the word STAINLESS etched on the side. Does anyone know what kind this is?

Sounds like the the P226 Stainless.

SIG just released this, same idea as the the P220ST. All stainless frame and slide in the finish you describe. The gun weighs more obviously, and also comes with an adjustable rear sight.

I don't have a picture, but here's a link to the press release.

This page has a picture of the 220ST, which should have the same finish and overall look.

Could be anything

May be an aftermarket Nickel or Hard Chrome job.

The P226ST hasn't hit the market yet.

The frame of the regular 226s are aluminum alloy, while the slides are Nitron-coated stainless steel. To be honest... I don't really know whether or not you can remove the blue from the frame without putting some other coating on it.

But if you go to the sigarms.com website, they list 4 possible finishes for the SIG P226:

Nitron
Two-Tone
Blued
Stainless Steel

So isn't it possible that it was a regular P226 in an all stainless steel finish?

I just checked the website.

Currently, only Nitron and Two-tone are listed as possible finishes for the P226. When you click the link, it shows you ALL available finishes (since all stainless is now available on P220's and Sports, they put a pic up) for ALL sigs.

I promise you, this thing had some aftermarket work done on it. If you call Sigarms, they will give you a first ship date for the P226ST. Sometime in May or June, IIRC.

On the Two-Tone model, what is the finish on the slide?

Would it be possible to get that finish (the one on the slide of a Two-Tone) on the frame?

I think the Two-Tone model has a Nickel slide. My guess would be that you'd be able to get the factory to Nickel the whole gun. In fact, a few very rare P229's have been seen sporting the full nickel finish (hence, the picture).

Hard chrome is a different story. I think I read a post on this site about a guy who had his whole P239 hard chromed. He said that he started with the slide, and liked it so much that he wanted the frame done that way as well.

He mentioned something about his original chrome shop not being able to do Aluminum, so he found another place to do it. If you search for "Chrome P239", you might find the post. Even though it was done by two different shops, the gun looks good, IMO.

Stainless is not a finish, it is a metal.

The SIG you saw was probably nickel plated. All new SIG 226s have the stainless steel slide.
