Sig p226 Barrel change

Hi All,

I am pretty sure you can take a Sig p226 in 9mm, get a .357 sig barrel and just put it in and you effectively have just taken your p226 from 9mm to .357 Sig.

Is this true?

Also, can the same be said for a .40 barrel? If you have a p226 in 9mm can you just stick a .40 barrel in there to make it a .40?

Thanks for info?

That is incorrect. The 9mm has a smaller case head diameter (.394")* than the .357 SIG and .40 S&W (.425")*. Also, the .357 SIG/.40 S&W P226's have slides that have been machined from a block of steel, like the P229. The 9mm P226's have a stamped steel slide with a breach block pinned in place.

* Recalled from memory (known to suffer from fade and/or farts occasionally).

So essentially, it would need a complete slide and barrel change? rather than just a barrell change.

Surely they use the same frame? Is that correct.

Hmmm... I believe that the ejector would need to be modified as well for the change between a 9mm and a .40 S&W / .357 Sig... So by time you buy the barrel, slide and modify the ejector, the project would probably not be economically viable... Unless you can get the parts cheap and you use your own labor...

Yep you are right. Not economically viable. The p229 I think is much easier for "caliber conversions" with a barrel swap between .357 Sig and .40 S&W. I had models confused. Looks like i will have to keep my 226 in 9mm and get the p229 as the next purchase :)
