Sig p224 for CC?

I've been really curious about the Sig p224 as a CC ever since they were released. Up until now I've only been carrying full sized .45s but I think it's time to move to something smaller. I plan on carrying it ever day so I have a few questions for those who own it, how would you describe it as a conceal carry gun? In terms of accuracy, concealability, is it much different than a p229?

Much smaller than a full-sized .45. I'd recommend starting with something halfway between them, a Compact. So if you're carrying a P220 or P227 now (or something similar sized), try moving to a P229, Glock 19, HK P2000 sized gun first.

The reason I say this is you are used to that nice long sight radius which has so many advantages for practical shooting. Jumping down to a P224 gives up a lot of that, and to what end? If you aren't having trouble concealing a full-size .45, I say stay as large as you can.

This coming from someone who carried P224-sized guns for years and just moved up to a Compact, and I'll never go back.

All that said though, the P224 is a nice little package. Shouldn't be less accurate than a P229, but YOU may be less accurate with it due to the reasons above. You also likely won't get a full grip on it, which may or may not be an issue. Should be much more concealable due to the short grip.

I find the p224 very easy to conceal. More than anything else it is much more comfortable to CC than the p229 to me. Back when I carried a p229 I always open carried it because it was just too uncomfortable to me to carry IWB. With the p224 I barely even notice I have it on me. As far as accuracy goes, once I got used to the DAK trigger on mine I didn't notice a difference between it and the p229.

I had one and just sold it. I like the 299 a lot. I thought this would be a great gun. The problem is that it is so heavy. It's ALMOST as heavy as a fullsize Beretta 92FS.

I've been carrying a Shield for a while now. I use a Smartcarry holster and carry it at the 3:30 position. I got my 224 and carried it. It has 12 + 1 rounds versus 7 + 1 of the Shield. But after 10 minutes of carrying that Sig 224 - I had enough. I tried it a few times and gave up.

It was a very difficult gun to sell, too. I had the nickel version - I usually sell a gun in 3-7 days. It took me probably over a month to finally find a buyer.

Be aware that the stock DA trigger is a little heavier then a M11A1, and much heavier than the 226 I previously had.

I WANTED to like the gun, as DA/SA is my preference. But I couldn't. With the weight of a fullsize gun, I'd rather carry a fullsize gun

Too thick too heavy :-/

Title says it all. Was upset when I got my hands on one. Can't see IWB being feasible with it. I typically pocket carry my .380 bodyguard. I've been eyeing the shield quite a bit.

I've been carrying full size .45s for the last year (1911, USP, and my current HK45) So I'm comfortable with a bit of weight. My question is mostly for how the gun itself is. No gun store in my area seems to carry it and I can't get very much of a feel for it from the pictures online.

To me it's not the weight itself, but more the size for the weight. The guns you mentioned are full size pistols. I expect them to weigh a lot. The P224 is by all other measure a subcompact. Yet at 29 oz. it weighs nearly as much as a P229 at 32 oz. It's like a Honda Civic that weighs as much as a Mercury Grand Marquis. More so it still has the heavy slide and high bore axis of the other P series pistols. Now bore axis doesn't bother me while shooting like it does some and I love my P228, but the P224 is, IMO, very unbalanced in the way it feels.

If DA/SA is something you like and you want a subcompact, I'd recommend looking at the HK P2000sk. You already have experience with HK, and it's the most concealable HK around.

I handled one a couple of months ago at my LGS and found it to be rather awkward. Its really heavy for its size and thick too. I think Tom gave a great suggestion with HK2000.
