Sig P220M for Mass.

I'm in the market for my 1st handgun, trying to choose a decent gun that complies with the Mass laws. I'm looking for a gun that can meet the new regs, or a gun manufactured before 10/21/98, because the new regs don't apply.

Sig has models designated as approved for Mass like the P220M. I couldn't find any details on the "M" models, but one Mass requirement is for new guns to have a 10 lb. trigger pull.

What does the rest of the world get for a trigger with a Sig, and how much difference will that make to a newbie?

I'm new to this, as I'm sure you can tell, but I've already learned tons from reading through these forums.

Thanks

:)

Wagon,

Welcome. What part of MA are you from? Some of the shops in this state have a pretty good inventory of pre 10/98 guns to choose from if you are still looking and want more variety.

If the Sig is what you're after I wouldn't worry about the 10lbs trigger. The ones I've tried still seem fairly smooth. Four Seasons in Woburn has had some MA compliant Sigs.

Others may be able to comment on a Sig trigger job as well.

TFL is a great place. Enjoy!

Thanks Hoppy,

I'm in Webster, on the Connecticut border. I was looking at the Four Seasons site today, thats where I saw the "M" models mentioned, its a very informative site, especially if you live in Mass.

I've been around to a few shops in this area, and you are right, there are a lot of pre 10/28 guns available.

The good news is that there is still a lot of options, even if you live in Mass.

Wagon,

I live in Sutton so you're not too far away. Where do you shoot?
Have you been to Sparky's? He has a pretty decent revolving inventory. I picked up a like new Kahr K40 in Nickel about 3-4 weeks ago. Great price too. I have always liked Sigs, but I have to recommend a Kahr. Sparky had two stainless K40 Coverts (shorter grip, I less round) under the counter last weekend. I don't think he had any Sig's. I'll probably stop by Four Seasons at lunch today and I can let you know if I see a 220M.

I've been to Sparky's, he had a used SIG 9mm a couple of weeks ago, I didn't have my LTC at that time, so I was just looking and holding the guns to feel the fit in my hand. He also had CZ, P99, Beretta etc. I'm leaning toward a .45 ACP model for my first handgun, but who knows.

I have an application in to join the 200 Sportsmens Club, I should hear on that soon.

Where do you shoot?

I shoot at Singletary. I've never been to the 200 but it's supposed to be a really nice club. They have a great pond there as well from the looks of it driving by.

Sig has a 245 model that looks nice. It's smaller than the 220 and .45. It think it's about the same size as the 239.

Do you know if the 200 has pistol competitions? I wouldn't mind trying a few.

Wagon,

I checked out a 220M at lunch. Nice gun. The trigger felt fine to me. I don't remember it being different from pre-MA compliant Sig triggers. The DA trigger is the one that has to be 10lbs. It doesn't feel heavy at all. Similar to my Mak (what's a Mak trigger in lbs?), the SA followup has a good feel to it.

The only other difference I see is a half circle cut out of the top of the action through which you'll be able to see if there is a round in the chamber.

You could do worse.

I bought a MA compliant P220 from Carl at Four Seasons last summer. I couldn't be happier with the gun or the service. I have had two P220 in the past (traded away in a moment of stupidity)
and I find my new one to be tighter, smoother and a touch more accurate.
FWIW, Sig has stepped up to the plate and is producing some of the finest handguns in the world for the MA consumer. Selling new handguns in this state puts the manufacturer in a legal trickbag. Other than #&#, name another company that has gone out of its way to produce a MA compliant brand new handgun. Sig has my support and my thanks.

Have any of you guys shot the Sig 245? How is the size - would it be a good choice for CC? If I can't find an older P220 is a new 245 something anyone would suggest? Thanks.

Steve,

I've handled the 245 but never shot it. I would choose the 245 over the 220 I think. Several years ago when I first received my permit my mind was set on a Sig. A 229 in .40 actually. The first time I picked up the 220 though, it was like WOW! it felt great, pointed very well for me and .45 to boot. So, I didn't know what to get.

Anyway, my first handgun turned out to be a Ruger Vaquero SS .357 (I thought I wanted to do some cowboy action shooting)..

Since then, I've gotten a Makarov and a Kahr K40, both very comfortable and great guns. So, to make a short story long when I picked up the 220 again, it felt HUGE just because of what I'm used to nowadays.
