Sig P220 versions and compatability?

I know the P220 has been around and gone through at least two updates. I have an older one (1996) and I'm wondering about parts interchangeability. Specifically, will new manufacture barrels fit older German guns? What about Hogue grips? What is this "American" designation I'm seeing when referring to Sigs? Does that refer to guns made in Exeter, N.H.? Are parts and accessories interchangeable with German guns? Inquiring minds want to know!

What is this "American" designation I'm seeing when referring to Sigs?

The "American" designation refers to the position of the magazine release.

The original P220s used the classic European "heel clip" type type magazine catch. I have one, imported by Browning, marked Browning BDA, bought new in 1980 (so I don't consider a 96 to be an "older one" :D) that has the heel clip type mag catch.

Some years later (not sure exactly when) SIG redesigned the P220 to use the "American" style push button release (like a Colt Govt model), and slightly slightly changed the shape of the butt of the gun. This is the "American" model, and has been the standard production gun for the past 20+ years.

For what its worth, I've never had one of the newer "American" models, my BDA has always served well, and continues to do so.

I'm just going by memory but I believe there was a change in the mid or late 90's on the trigger spring where some newer grips would cause some interference. I believe when I purchased Hogue grips for my 220 they came with a little plastic piece to compensate for the spacing difference. I'm sure because we have several knowledgeable Sig guys that post here one of them must have a better memory than myself. ;)
