SIG P220 or Kimber

I am considering buying a SIG P220 or one of the Kimber .45 models. How would these guns compare; accuracy, reliability, etc.

L.Erdman; I don't own a 1911 but a s&w 4506 which has the weight of a 1911 but it's double action which I like. I owned a sig P-220 for a couple of years. It was an absolutely awesome pistol! I was crazy too trade it. It never malfuntioned, not once! It felt good in the hand, was relatively light in weight, totally reliable and double action which I prefer over single action. IMHO Sig-Sauer's P-220 would be my choice. Good Luck, j.s.

Personally, I'd go for the P220. It's reliable and accurate. There are surely Kimbers that are just as reliable and just as accurate as the P220. But IMHO with the P220 you have a significantly better chance of getting a trouble-free and durable pistol right out of the box.

BTW, I'm also a 1911 buff and am not trying to bash Kimbers, so no flames, please.

I carried a P220 as a duty weapon for a number of years and found it to be an excellent weapon in every respect. However, we did have the occasional Sig develop minor problems, but nothing major. I currently own a Kimber Custom Classic that is approaching the 3000 round mark without a problem, I like it a *lot*.

It really depends on which opperating system you prefer. I find them both to be excellent firearms. I really didn't help did I ? :)

Depends on whether you prefer DA or SA pistols, really, and which one fits your hand the best. Both guns will be very reliable, and both can be very inherently accurate. I personally am more accurate with a 1911 than a DA gun, so the Kimber is more accurate for me, but that might not be so in your case. Try and find a rental range that will let you shoot both.

Greetings; Here is another vote for the
Sig P220A. This is one fine semi automatic
pistol; highly reliable and very accurate.
And it even operate's in extreme sub-zero
weather conditions. :D

I think I answered your post on another board but let me be redundant. I like both of the pistols a lot. Sigs are boring; they shoot and shoot well with few if any jams. Sigs are also annoyingly accurate. Of the S/A pistols I hold a Kimber on a pedestal. I like them better than Sigs. With this said, if I were a new shooter and could only own one 45acp pistol it would be a Ruger P90 or a Glock 30. I hold them in that high of regard. Repeating myself, regards, Richard.

I HAVE a SIG 220 and HAD a Kimber Custom Polymer. The SIG is a fantastic gun in all respects. The Kimber was a jam-o-matic from the start. I returned it to them and received it back in the same condition, and finally got rid of it. I know folks who love their Kimbers - I guess I just had a lemon.

Get the 220. You won't be sorry.

That question is like comparing apples and oranges. Yeah they're both fruits, being .45's, but you got two totally different feels. Do you prefer a DA or a SA? Do you want to customize it? If so, to what extent? What is the purpose of the pistol? Once you answer those questions, you should be able to decide which pistol is right for you. The rest of the knowledgable folks can provide you with all the pluses and minuses of each pistol. Ultimately, it's up to you with what your needs are for this purchase.

Do you want too be able to field strip your weapon of choice in 10 seconds or 60 seconds? Do you want six simple components or nine more complex (think about Murphy here) components? The other posts have cited other factors that will affect your choice. Just go with what feels right, and fits your budget.

I own both a Sig P-220 and a stainless Kimber Custom/Classic full-size 1911A1. Both are absolutely excellent semiautomatics.

Despite all the "Kimber bashing" I've read on TFL during the last few months, my pistol has been unbelievably accurate, reliable, and was clearly manufactured to exceptionally high design/quality standards for materials, machining, fit, finish, and operation.

The Sig P-220 is also very accurate (almost as accurate as the Kimber) and has operated flawlessly -- not one problem in thousands of rounds. It, too, has outstanding design, material, and manufacturing quality (probably equal or better than the Kimber, except it is not a stainless steel design).

You should consider eventually buying both semiautomatics. If, however, I were compelled to purchase only one, it would be the Sig P-220 because I believe it is slightly more reliable, which can be crucial in concealed carry and defensive situations.

I bought a SIG 220 just when a friend bought a nice Kimber. His was far prettier than my 220, but my 220 was the better gun. Both of us shot the 220 more accurately, and the 220 didn't jam on any of 6 kinds of ammo we tested. We had to "find" the right ammo for the Kimber, and it's jam rate is still higher than the SIG. Kimber was very accurate, though, and a nice gun.

The Sig and the Kimber are both excellent pistols; however, if you are not certain which to buy, you must not have reached a decision as to whether you want double action or single action with a safety. To me, this is a major issue.

I've owned Kimbers and Sigs, both great guns. I always come back to Glock, however, for several reasons. Probably the two biggest reasons are the same reasons I don't carry a 1911 or a Sig. I don't want a safety on my carry pistol; I want it to be a no-brainer: just pull and shoot. The other is that I want there to be NO difference between the first trigger pull and any thereafter. This is no small matter. IF you don't believe it, do some drawing and double tapping with the Sig, the Glock, and a 1911, preferably with a timer.

Check where your second shots are going with the double action, particularly before you've warmed up with several tries.

For what it's worth.
