Sig P220 Ballistics Information

I find myself buying guns I can't afford but given the stakes we are up against in November, I can't afford not to. I wanted a big-bore keeper, and chose the P220 because of my positive experiences with the P225 and P230.

My P220 has the 20lb. green spring, smooth grips and says "Made in Germany" with the solid guide rod. +P rated according to Sig.
I'm assuming it was assembled in the states, no way to tell.

My current defense load is the 230gr. Federal HS. Prints excellent, just like the 230gr. Winchester ball ammo I use for practice. Also use the HS round because it is the round used by local LEO's, except they use the .40 caliber. From a CCW perspective, I have read and been advised by actual LEO's to try to carry the type of brand the local LEO standardizes on. That makes sense to me from a litigation standpoint. If I ever actually have to use the gun, I was using the brand.....etc.

I did all the searches on TFL, Dale T's, Federal's home page etc. I can't find any actual ballistic information on the P220 with the 230gr. Federal HS, not even on the Sig Forum.

Anyone out there performed tests on the round? How many FPS out of a 4.4 inch barrel? What is the penetration? Not to be morbid or anything but does anyone have any real-life self defense experience using this round out of the P220?

Or, should I go to the 185gr. load with increased velocity? I hate to use +P's as they are kind of tough on an aluminum-framed gun, despite the modifications by Sig to beef it up.

Please advise.

Hann

Last time I checked it ran at 780fps from my Sig 220. That was about 2 years ago but I guess it would be about same now. I don't know about penetration.

Hann-
I have carried a P220 for almost ten years now and like the 230gr. Federal Hydrashok for some of the same reasons you mentioned. It is very accurate and shoots to almost the exact same point of aim as 230gr. hardball practice ammo.
I say stick with a great round that does not beat up you or your gun and is well proven on the street.
By the way, lately Cheaper Than Dirt www.cheaperthandirt.com has been selling FIFTY round boxes of 230gr. .45 ACP Hydrashoks for $15.49 a box. They may still have some. Item number is AMM-515.
I got a case of 500 for $170 including delivery by Fedex.

You picked a great load. I'd say keep using it and don't switch to +P rounds.

I hate to say this, but whoever told you that is so full of ****. You will get in no more trouble using a different load than you would using the Federal HS. I would never base my decision on this information.
