Sig P220/1911 8rd magazines question

How reliable are the 8rd magazines for these two types of handguns? Since both guns were originally based on 7rd magazines. As for the Sig. I'm talking about the factory 8rd ones (or replacing the follower/spring of a 7rd magazine with a 8rd one). I know for the 1911 it is kind of a general question for them since there is a lot of makes of 1911's and magazines. The Sig I already have (with 7rd magazines). In the next 2-3 weeks I'll be getting a Kimber Custom Classic Target (if this helps). I don't mind using the 7rd capacity ones for both guns. Just wanting to know of other options.

I put "American" eight round followers in my 220 mags and have had no problems other than getting the 8th round in (really tight) or seating the loaded mag with the slide closed (i.e. tactical reload).

I've got both factory 8rd and converted 7rd P220 mags and they both work fine. I've never had a mag related failure to feed.

If you follow Ayoob's tactics, he always loads one round less than the max anyway. In his thinking, the 7rd mag allows you six rounds and the 8rd mag allows you seven. If I remember right, he was all for 8rd mags, because seven is better than six.

Welcome, uncle, to TFL. I've got a factory stainless eight rounder for my P-220 and it works perfect. It sticks out the bottom about a 1/4" but looks just fine. Can't comment on the eight rounders for 1911's, sorry. Best Regards, J. Parker

The only problem I've had with the eight round 1911 magazines has been the plastic follower will wear on the slide lock engagement edge and fail to lock the slide back after the last round. More hassle than problem really.

I had a Wilson CQB that didn't like Wilson Combat 8 rounders (go figure). It worked fine with the McCormicks 8 rounders. I've had other 1911's that go finicky with 8 rounders too so I just carry Wilson Combat 7 rounders + 1 in the chamber.
