A buddy of mine is going to work for a local PD that issues the Sig226(.40) but allows other semi autos for carry.... but like me he is left handed. We both went to the range and put several boxes thru a sig226 and both of us felt very uncomfortable shooting with that decocker in the way. Do any lefties shoot Sig's that got use to it? We then shot the GLock 31 (great gun!).

Im also wondering what is the best caliber for Leo's, I know alot of departments use the .40 and the .357 now adays. Did they get away from the .45 becuase its lack of ability to penetrate barriers? I like the .357 sig cartridge but its very un nerving reading about bullet set back and its intolerability (if thats a word :) ) for ammo discrepencies. I have heard the .40 SW wont kB as long as you stay away from 180 grain and get good factory non reloads. Which is fine by me. Anyway, any thoughts?

thanks guys, stay safe

I'd say Glock. Its controls, or lack thereof are ambidexterous.

All are effective rounds, so don't agonize over it.

How about a Beretta? I'm a lefty and have enjoyed shooting both Glocks and Sigs, but I buy Berettas for myself because I can operate the controls.

In .40, you could get either a 96 or 8040 Cougar. As a LEO, you may have a little better access to the G operating system (decock only), which isn't very available on the civilian market, unless you buy a 96G Elite II for $700. I've heard that Cougars can be a bit finicky unless kept clean. Otherwise, both the 96G and 8040G are incredibly solid guns.

I prefer the SIG Sauer because of its ergonomics and superior accuracy, but almost all handguns are just fine for us left-handed shooters. 1911s without an ambidextrous thumb safety suck, but they can be fixed.:D

i'm a lefty and have 1 sig and many glocks. i don't have that much trouble with the sig but find the glock much easier to use. the decocker isn't a problem (i just use my trigger finger) but the slide release is really out of the way. normally i use the slingshot method anyway but if i need to reload with 1 hand it's hard to get to since it's set back so far on the frame. with glocks you can hit the mag release with your trigger finger (most find it easier to do this than it is for righties to use the mag release) and the slide stop's easier to reach if you need it.

I am a lefty and have owned both Sigs and Glocks and I find that the Glocks are easier for a left hander to manipulate. While I was able to teach myself to use the Sig properly, the location of the slide release lever on the Glock is much easier to reach for malfunction and administrative clearance.
