sig mauser m2 range report...feedback welcome

I sold my Glock 17 because I wanted a compact weapon, and the Mauser M2 by Sigarms really caught my eye in the gun store. It is a heavy weapon, which is not a bad thing for a hot load like .40 caliber. I took it to the range for the first time yesterday, and the results were mixed. I was firing Blaser FMJ rounds at distances of 5 to 15 yards. Put 100 rounds through it with not a single FTE, FTF, etc. Being a NIB pistol, the trigger was VERY tight, which gave me a boatload of accuracy problems. I expect that it will loosen up considerably after a few hundred more rounds (at least I hope it will). Again because of its weight, recoil was not noticeably worse than a 9mm, which is a nice feature. It fits well in my Galco holster, and can be carried concealed with ease. The safety is in an unusual place (looks like an afterthought to me), but it is easily swiped off, so it's not problematic. Overall, I'm not unhappy with the gun's performance; it's just going to take some serious getting used to. Disassembly and cleaning was AWFUL (I guess I was spoiled after having owned a Glock!). The owner's manual gives a step-by-step instruction of how to take the gun apart, but leaves out a step, so it took me over an hour just to get the slide removed. The dealer that sold me the gun told me that this gun requires cleaning after each use, whereas you can clean a Glock once in a blue moon and it will never fail you. Because of it's rare rotating barrel feature, it seems to be a fairly high-maintenance gun. I realize that 100 rounds is not enough to truly test the gun's merit, so I'm taking it back to the range for a follow-up shoot today. So far, I think I like it, but I'm just not used to it. Anyone had any good or bad experiences with these guns? I'd like to know what to expect.

Like you, I was not overwhelmed by the M2 I had bought (and since traded in). It shot well enough, the trigger was a bit long but the recoil was much lighter than expected (probably due to its very wide grip amd heft). Didn't shoot it as well as the P220.

In the end, I still was not convinced of the accuracy of rotating barrelled actions and I couldn't get over that extra lever to disassemble the gun as well as having to have the slide stop in the up position to remove it. Seemed unnecessarily complicated.

Got one in .45acp

I've put about a thousand rounds through mine and I like it more and more. It definitely took some getting used to, but not any more than any other new gun I've picked up.

I had a few failure to feeds in the first couple hundred rounds, but not a single malf since then.

Once I got used to the trigger (which is really not bad at all for a non-tweaked out of the box gun) I have found it to be surprizingly accurate. As far as a shooter, its a real winner, so far. There is very little perceived recoil, no doubt due to the gun's heft. It comes back on target easily.

Take down is, as you've noted, very weird. I also slaved away for quite a while before I realized how it came apart! You won't want to try field stripping this gun unless all bad guys within a half mile are down for good first!

I like my M2. I'm definitely keeping it. I like it enough that I alternate it with a 92FS as my carry piece. That should say something about how reliable its been. For 400 bucks you are stealing this gun.

I stole mine for $350...cop shop trade-in, hardly used. I bought it mainly based on the ergonomics...it fits my hand very well. The trigger is a bit peculiar, but you get used to it quickly. I found the M2 to be very accurate, and more pleasant to shoot than the similarly-sized Glock 30 and USP Compact in .45ACP.

It's well-made, flawlessly reliable with all kinds of ammo I've fed it so far, very accurate, and easy to tote. I like it so much, I made it my .45 carry gun.

Here's my $0.02 on the SIG/Mauser M2:

I have 1220 rounds through my M2, (.45). So far, I have had 2 FTE's. This weekend my brother-n-law and I went shooting. We set up bowling pins at 50 yards and I just kept mowing them down. He couldn't belive it. He was shooting a 44 mag so when he connected it was spectacular, but he didn't connect like I did! Finally, he complained that I was knocking all the pins down before he got a chance to, so I started shooting the pins laying on the ground at roughly 25 yards. I could hit them practically every shot. The gun is accurate.

I did have a breakage this weekend at around 1150 rounds though. The slide catch lever broke. The little tang that you actually push down on with your thumb apparently broke off while firing. The gun continued to work just fine though. It only quit working when I ran outta ammo.

Breakdown is harder than some other pistols I have had, but once you do it a coupla times, it's a breeze.

For me, it was money well spent. Everybody who has shot it seems to agree.

Update on breakage

Called Sig today. They are sending out a replacement slide catch free of charge. I was hoping they would. I didn't tell them how many rounds had been through it, or volunteer the date of purchase. Pretty reasonable I'd say. My next pistol may very well be a Sig. Wish I'd asked why the extra mags for the M2 are so darn much though. $50 is way too high. They would sell many more if they were cheaper. At least to this kid they would anyway.

I sent an e-mail to SigArms through their website and asked them why the price of the mags is so out of line. I also told them that it could very likely stop me from buying another one. We'll see what the response is.

No response from Sig on my question of why spare mags are so high. They were kind enough to send me a catalog with a price list though. The prices of the M2 mags are the same as the prices of all their other pistols. Whick I think is stupid. The M2 cost me $420. Using their price list I have a $220 gun with $100 worth of magazines. Jacking the price of spare mags because they can ain't cricket in my book. I'm going to e-mail them again about the lack of response, but I have undoubtedly bought my last Sig. Even though I think they make really really good products.

Interesting.

leadstringer, have you tinkered with the trigger any to improve it? Wonder how hard it would be to bring the pull down a few lbs. Do you have any other .45's to compare it too. Say like the G30, DDA or even the Witness?

Im looking at all the options in the .45 field.

Mesa,
Don't let the $50 M2 mags dissuade you from getting more SIGs. For most of the other SIGs you can get mags for $25-30. Heck, you can get factory high-caps (standard-caps) for the 226 for $50. (228 and 229 high-caps hover around $80, though the 228 will take 226 high-caps). I get mags for my 239 for less than $30 -- not as cheap as Glock mags, but then again, they're not plastic... ;)
