SIG grip size feel - P220 vs. P226

Ok...if you compare a stock P220 versus a P226 with the factory short trigger, will the P226 feel a lot thicker overall?

The reason I ask is that I have a P226 that is great, except the trigger reach is a bit long. I am thinking about installing a short trigger (and also getting a .357 SIG barrel for it, as I have grown to not like the .40 too much).
HOwever, I am somewhat used to 1911s, and since the P220 is a single stack, I was wondering if it would feel a lot thinner to me.

Any comments or suggestions?

I never shot a NY trigger in the sigs, but I've owned both models. Yes, the 220 is markedly different. Some say better, other not. :) I like em both. One "fills" the hand more (226) while the other feels like you've got a better grip on the gun (220).

At least to me anyway.

I have both except my 226 is in 9mm. I agree with levelhead. The 220 is narrow and long while the 226 is very fat and round. I put the short trigger on my 220 because of the longish grip. I don't seem to experience quite the same problem with the 226. I also experience what appears to be a better grip with the 220.

The 220 however does not feel like a 1911 in my opinion. I really can't explain it, but maybe it's the panels on the 1911. My S&W 945 is a little more square and does feel somewhat like the Sig and it is a 1911 hybrid/variant!?!

Folk's the difference also rest in the grip angle; with Sig's
P220 having the "American" style grip angle, and the P226
uses the "European" style grip angle. I much prefer the
feel of the P220; as opposed to that of the P226.

FWIW, the same holds true for the P228 vs. the P225.
Like the P220, the P228 uses the "American" style, while
the P225 has the "European" style, much like that of the
P226.

If you have the 226 in 40S&W you can get the 357SiG barrel, but if you have the 226 in 9mm, it won't work.

The P226 IS a lot thicker than the P220 and it feels thicker. The P220 is thin, but it does not feel like a 1911 either. Watch-Six

I find that although the 226 feels better in the hand, the 220's grip actually works better. The length of the grip puts my trigger finger in the perfect place for DA work, and the configuration causes the sights to be right on target when I bring it up. The only problem with the 220 is that I have to shift a bit to hit the mag release.

So even though the 226 subjectively feels like it should work better for me, it doesn't. This isn't really surprising, though. The Glock 19 grip feels better to me but I shoot it worse than either the 17 or the 26. That's why you have to shoot them side by side to really know what's going on.

i also have both, a 220 american in .45 and a 226 in 9mm.

the 220 is:
1. "longer" front to back but narrower side to side
2. it grips "better" because you actually get your fingers "around" the front strap to the opposing grips panel
3. i had the trigger "shortened/thinned" and rounded when i had the action tuned to gain additional control of the DA pull

the 226 is:
1. "shorter" but "wider"
2. it feels "better" in the hand because the "fatter" grip sits in the "pocket" of your palm
3. i had a short trigger installed for the first shot also

the difference in feel of the two can be compared to that of the 1911 vs. p-35

i was taught that you gripped fore and aft with your strong hand and used your supporting hand to press the stocks into the strong palm.

i think my 220 feels like a 1911 with the arched mainspring housing, it feels "thicker" because of it's continuous radius of the backstrap as opposed to the 1911's separate mainspring housing...i like the thicker feel and have hogue rubber of both the 220 and 226
