Sig 556 or M&P15? Opinions Welcome

I am looking at the Sig 556 Classic SWAT and the S&W M&P15T and would like to know what the general consensus is about both of them, and how they would compare to each other. I realize the Sig is piston operated while the other is DI and that these are not truly direct comparisons.

My only reservation about the 556 is the stock being a folding type that is not replaceable with the M4 style stock. I understand there were older 556 models that had the M$ style stock but those seem to be quite difficult to find.I can find the 556 Classic SWAT for around $1050. I also like the idea behind the piston operation, but am willing to listen.

The M&P15T is more pricey from what I've found (~$1400) which sorta puts it out of my range. But I've read great things about it as well.

I'm really just looking for your impressions of either or both.

Thanks

Two of my shooting buddies have bought Sig 556 guns. Both have had lots of annoying little problems. Bolt locking back while there is still ammo in magazine. Bolt not locking on empty mag. The little red dot you get instead of a rear diopter sight is junk. I know there are lots of people who are happy with their Sig rifles but the ones I have had direct experience with were kinda crappy for what they cost.

The little built in flip up sight on the 556 is a cute idea, but crappy in execution. And my buddy had to put thread locker on the screws for the handguard because they worked lose (which SIG should have done). But all in all everyone that has used has loved it, especially myself! It is a bit heavy as one would expect (i actually think the M&P is kinda bulky feeling for an AR), and its not compatible with ALL the AR goodies like the M&P. But for what its worth, for anywhere near $1,000, I would buy the Sig EVERY time!

Like Zombie says below. If want to go with the M4 design, and you can even consider $1,400, there are WAY better guns out there if you shop around!!!

I'd much rather have the Sig. Don't pay 1400 for an M&P. There is a multitude of vastly superior rifles out there for that kind of dough. I had two M&Ps and they sucked bad. I won't go all into it, as oi just did in another thread. Look into my post history in dealing with my S&W's. Just my 2cents

Zombie -

I actually just finished reading your posts on another thread, from what I'm gathering neither are "perfect" (if there even is such a thing). Quite informative though.

Are there other rifles anyone would suggest taking into consideration?

My primary purpose is just for plinking, but I'd like to enjoy being able to customize/add to it etc., hence the reasoning behind the quad rails. I'm really up for suggestions. Consider it may be hard to justify purchasing another rifle after this decision has been made, so this may be it for me :D

If you want a fun plinker, an AR isn't a bad choice. Just me personally, I'd go with an honest-to-goodness AR company like Spikes or Stag. Good quality for not too much money.

On a purely plinking note; With a traditional M4 style you can use a drop in .22 kit as well, may not be so with the exotics (SIG, ACR, SCAR). Just a thought.....

1400 is above mfrs suggested retail for the M&P. I got both of mine (2) for a little less than that.

Shop around, there are good deals around.

The Early model S&W M&P were built by Stag, So Stag would in my mind be a good alternative brand choice.

There are even some pretty decent franken rifles at good prices out there.
$600 to $800 will get you a very nice AR.

CDNN has some good prices in the catalog.

The Sig never really caught my attention so I dont know much about them.
