Sig 556 opinions

I am looking to purchase a new rifle and i cant stop looking at the Sig 556. I have heard mixed reviews that range from QC to cheap stocks and sights. I like the handguards on the SWAT model I know they are barrel heavy but the weight isnt an issue. I just dont want to buy a Sig and have to worry about quality issues it just doesnt seem right to be concerned about Sig's quality but i am because of what i have read. I owned a Bushmaster for a while and i liked it but i'm really wanting to try something different. Has Sig worked out these issues since the rifle has been out for a while now or is it still ongoing? Please feel free to give your opinions i'm going to make a purchase soon i just need some honest feedback. Thank you

I have the plastic forgrip not the metal like the swat and I love it other than the weight. Only thing I did was change the crappy stock to a rock river. I carried it at work when I was a cop and I love the reliability over a standard ar, but there are some new gas piston ars that are just as good and way lighter. I think ruger makes one. I like having it chambered in 556 so I have 2 different ammos to choose from. The sights are good for folding ones, throw a eco tech on there and you'll be in love and not want to shoot anything else

Awesome, thats exactly the kind of info i need. I do believe that the replacement stock is a must. I cant believe Sig actually thought those cheap folding stocks were a good idea.

I have a 556 Classic with the Swiss style handguards. I like it alot. The early models had some issues bu lt that was a while ago. Get one. The fit and finish are nice and it is very smooth. If you're going to change the stock go with an original Swiss buttstock.

I don't know the results of G&A's review of the SR-556 was not all that good. I am not sure the piston systems have been completely worked out. So far the DI systems seem to be a bit more reliable. For the dollars they are charging for the piston systems I think they should have done a better job on the design.

The S&W M&P-15 seems to be a good buy and is on sale a lot. With the dollars saved, you can dress it up anyway you want and still have cash for ammo.

Just my opinion.

Try a little harder.

A wobbly plastic stock that will sometimes pull free of the part that is supposed to keep it folded has no place in a $1000+ rifle. Chintzy red dot sights supplied rather than the diopter rear that all the military 551/552 guns have? Oh wait, you want the diopter rear sight? That'll be $100.

I have yet to see a Sig 556 that is as reliable as either of my AR-15s. I have seen the Sigs lock the bolt open while there there is still rounds in the mag. I have seen them lock shut needing to be "kick started" to open the bolt.

I will say that I really want to like the Sig 556. The ones my friends have bought (a 556P SWAT and a 556 classic) display great accuracy. They just don't want to run.

I've run mine through a 500 round over two days class without cleaning and without problems. Mine is a SWAT model with the diopter sight. I've had it about 1 1/2 yrs and haven't found anything to really dislike about it. The slightly nose heavy aspect keeps it on target really well during rapid fire. It tends to be about a 1.0-1.5 MOA rifle rather than sub-MOA like some ARs. On the other hand, the chamber stays much cleaner and everything runs cooler.

It does tend to be a little hard on brass as it ejects a little forcefully and sends them kind of far forward and to the right. You won't be hitting people next to you with your brass. Some people don't like that it mars the finish a bit where the brass bounces off, but it's no biggie to me. Otherwise it's finish is durable.

Other than being hard on brass I have had only one issue with mine. On one range trip it quit locking the bolt open on an empty mag. When I got home and took it apart to clean it I could never figure out why it was happening and it hasn't happened since.

My rra ar-15 had a similar problem with the bolt locking open with a round in the mag, but only with an aftermarket mag. Once I replaced the follower with a new magpul, it loaded every time. I wonder if this would do the trick here as well.

"The chamber stays much cleaner" is anecdotal. Most self loaders get equally dirty chambers, and equally dirty gas cylinders and pistons.

What so many complain about - the dirty AR - is something they can see in less than 30 seconds of disassembly. Gas pistons on the barrel are more difficult to take down, and get ignored a lot more. Garand shooters in combat knew that maintenance was mandatory, or it would choke up, and not even come apart. Yet this lesson learned is ignored today, because "We don't have to clean it."

Ahh, wasn't that EXACTLY what was promised when the first M16 was issued?

You buying that BS, again?

Lesson not learned.

Get the SIG if the ambiance of owning one overwhelms you decision making, but realize, just as in the day when HK's were selling for way less than $200, you are buying into a platform with a single source supplier, no competition in that specific design, and very little market support. In other words, a SCAR, ACR, or XCR would be an equally valid choice.

It is for others, it's discretionary income, not a needed purchase for living in civil life, like a car. Get what you want - but avoid all the "good enough for combat?" thinking. It's a commercial copy, a Mustang with racing stripes, not an actual GT350R with all the race hardware.

Just know what you're getting into.

I have shot about 3000 plus rounds through mine and its one of the very first ones out and have only cleaned it 2 times, and no failures. The bolt locking open with rounds still in the magazine sounds like crappy magazines to me. I have the stock and 7 magazine pulls never a issue. I have seen all kinds of problems with ars even my friends who takes care of it like its his child.

Saying the chamber stays cleaner is not just anecdotal if you own and shoot both 556s and ARs, as I do. It is easy to verify. It also doesn't mean people saying that the chamber stays cleaner are saying you don't need to clean or maintain the weapon.

For the record, I have 4 AR-15s, an AR-10, and one 556, so it's not like I don't appreciate ARs.

I have over 2000 runds through my sig and it has been flawless. It takes whatever i feed it and runs like a champ. The thing is far more accurate than I can hope to be and is simple to maintain.

It is front heavy but i like that it seems to help keep it on target. I would not hesiate to get another one if the funds were there.
