Sig 556 Any better?

I have been looking into the Sig 550 series, as a plinker, target, and varmint gun. Long time fan of Euro-style weapons, and have taken a love for Swiss-bred weaps.

However, the reports of the Sig 556 being a troublemaker have me worried. Numerous reports of bad accuracy, buttstocks coming apart, etc. But, these are all dated 2008-2010, and many make no mention of ammo use with accuracy (55gr? 75? 62?) It's known that the SIG556 likes 75gr rounds best, with 55 making 2-3" holes @ 100yds. (still minute-of-2/LG/VMT)

Also, any thread involving "is the sig556 that bad?" or "my [firearm] broke and the company sucks!" is going to attract EVERY OTHER unhappy owner with a similar situation for 100 miles.

So, my question is this - on a BROAD scale, HAPPY OWNERS included, has the SIG 556 improved in QC? Are they worth getting? Or are they still hit-or-miss like I've heard many of the new Sigs are?

Thankyou!

I have the Sig556 pistol so can't really speak to the stock issue but I have absolutely no issues with the weapon. I haven't put a ton of rounds thru her yet but everytime i've taken it out it has performed flawlessly. Very smooth operating and easy to shoot. I also have an AK pistol and, as you would probably expect, the Sig is so much more refined. Like driving a sports car versus a lumber wagon. Never the less, I love shooting the AK. I plan on SBRing both and giving the Sig a more tactical look. Hope this helps.

does the 556 have the same problems as the 556R? i found a boat load of info on the malfunctions on the 556R but not much on the 556

The 556R seems to have more issues these days than the 556 does. Early regular 556 models sometimes had problems.

I have a 556 SWAT that hasn't had any problems, and I ran it through a 500 round class without cleaning or lubing and no malfunctions. It's a nice rifle if you don't want an AR.

I haven't used a 556R.

i like the look of the 556's cause i like the AK platform but i was looking for a 7.62x39 and everything seemed to be in the AR platform which i do not like, any suggestions im in the range of $1500-1800, iv looked in to the saiga's and i like them and there cheap but i just cant make up my mind.

I have the 556 Classic Swat and am very happy with it. I've only put 200 rounds through it or so but no jams. I like it doesn't have the sproing of an AR and due to weight is very soft to shoot. Fit and finish on mine are great.

Accuracy using American Eagle 55gr is in the 2-3" ball park.

My only complaints are with the swat, the heavy forend makes it very front heavy and the girth of the forend makes it hard for me to comfortable wrap my hand around. To minimize that problem I put a vertical grip on the forend to make it a bit handier. The only other complaint is the collapsible stock is very sloppy in the slide mechanism. It doesn't really affect the function, just annoying for a rifle so pricy.

i really like the 556 patrol with the shortened gas system and i "heard" it helped with the heavy forend and i like the look plus they have the patrol swat that has a quad rail thats about 8" long so just big enough for a few accessories

You do know that the SIG America 556 is not Swiss in any manner except a couple of design opticals, right? Its not to be compared to the Swiss SIG 550, 551 or 552's.
The only connection beteween Sig American and SIG Switzerland is that a member of the board in Bern is also a member of the board at SIG America., otherwise the rifle is all American.
Despite my connections with Swiss firearm accessories and ties in Switzerland, I happen to be absolutely pro-American Made anyway. :D
