Sig-550

Very cool, but not worth that kind of money ($7500 at this point). I thought they were way overpriced at $4000 when they were offered last time a few years ago.

I very good gun, I own one, but not worth that much. I live in Finland and bought one exactly similar here (one aimed for US market before the ban there) NIB about two years ago for about US$2.000. It is better than most semiautos, but $6.000 to $7.500 is all too much of it.

Geee - this IS expensiiiiive

We pay 2500 Swiss Francs for one here, semi-auto. The full-auto costs
the same, for civilians at least, paperwork not counted.

That's something 1600-1700 US-$ if I got the conversion right.

The conclusion is simple: If you want a SIG 550, move to Switzerland.

i'd pay 2k for one in a heartbeat and even sign a contract to never sell it for a profit. out here in CA we can't even pay 10k for one.

i think it was much like the steyr aug, getting caught at the port of entry...i had my deposit in, i even offered to pay the air frieght...

it's a COOL Rifle, why can Sig not do what H&K did with the G36, or make it here in the US. i would buy one, and i know a lot of you would to.

Love to have one, but agree it's not worth that much!

Glad to see we have Finnish and Swiss friends on this forum.

Many gun-owning Americans are broadly familiar with Swiss gun laws.

Ossi, I know Finland enjoys a reputation as a land of superb rifle makers. Out of curiousity, do you have to "jump through many hoops" or "government redtape" to own such a weapon?

swiss gun laws aren't that lenient anymore. OTOH, we don't have a lot
of feature bans, and full-autos (as well as silencers, lasers and NV
scopes) require paperwork, but they're rather easy to get as long as
your criminal record is clean. Carrying is somewhat critical - I have
a temporary permit, but I don't think I'll be able to renew it with
the local authorities in Fall since I don't work in a high-risk
business anymore.

Of course, we have the antis here too, but they keep somewhat quiet.
They'd just like to make private party transfers illegal without a
permit.

It ain't as good as it used to be when we could buy almost everything
except handguns and full-autos over-the-counter without paperwork.

Counterstrike

Ahh, many a times I've been slain in Counterstrike by the '550. I can't seem to use it myself, as the muzzle flash blinds me, though the gun does seem pretty accurate. I was surprised to see a real picture of the sig, as the game depicts the gun as being quite short.

Can anyone comment on how accurate the counterstrike team managed to get down the weapons characteristics?

Here in Finland every gun purchase (except airguns) requires a permit that cost $ 20 and takes about a week to get. Local police can issue permits for law abiding citizens who have an "acceptable" reason for it, those reasons including hunting, target shooting, collecting, work etc., but not self-defence. In practice, if one doesn't have criminal record it is quite easy to get permit for a hunting gun, somewhat more difficult for a .22 handgun, and again somewhat more difficult for larger caliber handguns and semiauto sporter rifles.

Unlike in many other European countries, here in Finland sprays require permits also (self defence is "acceptable" reason for sprays), but as stupid as it might sound in many jurisdictions here getting a handgun permit for target shooting is easier than getting a spray permit. Another local specialty is very strict regulation of "pocket guns"; permits for small "easily concealable" handguns are very difficult to get. Full auto guns can be purchased only by state approved gun collectors.

In Finland silencers do not require permits and there is no hicap magazine ban, except for hunting with semiautos. Flash supressors, bayonet mounts, pistol grips etc. are not regulated; if one is given a permit for a semiauto sporter (and that is not given to everyone), one can buy what is called "preban" in USA, brand new. Mail order gun purchases are legal and common for permit holders, including private import from other countries.

Mussi, I have noticed that the gas rod head in my SG550 becomes very dirty when shooting, even after a small amount of rounds. Should some special treatment be given to gas rod head? Is it better to leave it unoiled after cleaning, since it is hard cromed?

Ossi

SIG 550 gas rod heads.

Just leave them unoiled. In the event you hauled enough ammo through
the gun in full-auto the rod head (and the rod) gets red hot, dip the
whole gun in water and let it drain for a few seconds, then tap it it
slightly at the butt and continue shooting. We just take a towel for
cleaning the rod, and it must be, some plastic brush. Don't scour it,
don't scratch it.

Full-auto will ruin the bore sooner or later, however.

What does your manual say about the gas rod and gas rod head?
