sig 522 vs. s&w 15-22

i found a sig 522 on sale last year for $370. couldn't pass it up. after a lifetime dealing with semi auto 22 malfunctions i finally found what i wanted. 20 years late but the sig 522 is the one. it had a total of 4 failure to feed within the first 300 rounds then it ran 100% perfect, im almost at the 6,000 mark. i tried all brands of ammo and they all cycled perfectly. i mostly use the bulk winchester red box or the bulk wal mart federal. the trigger and accuracy are great. only problem is the mags won't function well if the insides don't have a little lube and its best to put only 20 rounds instead of 25.

my brother in law bought a s&w 15-22. it comes with peep sights! it looks better than the 522. imo the mags are much better. but. it feels like cheap plastic. the receiver and bolt handle(?) are weak feeling. the trigger is funk. it does seem to function well but i can't keep records on it like my 522 and he's one of those weirdos who buys a gun, shoot it a couple times and thats about it. so i have no first hand proof that the 15-22 functions well with all ammo.

so i want to put a hunting scope on the 522 and buy another .22 rifle for peep sights. not sure if i want another 522 or go for the 15-22. are you 15-22 owners happy? give me the good and bad scoop.

Happy owner!

I love my M&P 15-22. It's very accurate with the iron sights and any other sights I put on it. I have magpul MBUS and BSA Stealth red dot cowitnessed on it at the moment. I shot it yesterday at silhouette targets, I think distance were 50 yds (chicken), 60 (pig), 75 (turkey) and 100 (ram). Standing and unsupported using both iron sights and red dot. It's obviously harder with the iron sights with an 80% hit rate and the red dot was hitting 90%+, but that's just the shooter.

As far as reliability, mine will shoot the walmart federal ammo 100%. I also use the CCI standard velocity and the Tactical Rimfire, zero problems with those also. I run mine pretty dry, no extra lube before i shoot and it functions great. When I first bought it, I used remington golden bullets and the winchester and those worked well but I had a couple of FTF with both and they seem to be dirtier so I don't use those anymore.

I have never shot a 522 but I think my 15-22 mimics my M&P 15 OR and Sport very well.

+1 for the 15-22. I put a Primary Arms red dot M4 scope on mine and find it to be very accurate. It's a fun gun to shoot. I shoot mostly CCI or Federal bulk pack ammo through it and have never had a malfunction. My 13 year old grandson loves shooting it because of the collapsable stock that can be adjusted to fit him.

It is very easy to strip and clean. Takes down almost exactly like a full size AR 15.

I don't even notice the fact that the received and magazines are polymer. They are holding up very well.

Cannot think of anything negative to say about the 15-22 after shooting it for over 2 years and putting thousands of round through it.

Love mine

Greetings,

I have the pistol, MOE rifle and Performance Center rifle. They all work very well, accuracy in general is good but not bench rest tight and of course varies from brand to brand of ammo.

As far as the triggers, the pistol and MOE weren't very good. Gritty, too much slack, and a heavy pull. However, for under $20 you can safely get these to become pretty good. J-P spring set and an allen set screw, a little polishing of the sear with Flitz and you're good to go.

The PC version's trigger is a Rock River Arms two stage. It weighed in at 7 lbs. of pull. On a "match grade" rifle? Really? I put the spring kit in and polished the sear a tiny bit just enough to smooth it out without actually removing any sear material. It now breaks at 4 1/2 lbs. In my opinion, the PC isn't worth the extra $200 as it doesn't group any better on the bench than my MOE.

The 15-22s are very similar to a "real" AR except for the polymer parts and are lighter. They are Mil-Spec also.

After shooting the smitty (friend's rifle), I find it to be one of the most entertaining firearms I've ever shot. But (and that's a BIG but :D) the SIG Sauer, was built around the Black Dog magazine. The functionality of the magazine, & it's capability to feed the rifle, will make or break the reliability of any semi auto.

Guess I'd buy both, and decide after a 1 year test drive :D
