Sig 229 problem

Hi all and good to meet ya. I had a problem the other day and wondered if anyone could offer some advice? My 229 has fired many rounds of 40sw without so much as a hiccup, but the other day upon trying the .357 Sig barrel, for the first time, it failed to fire on 2 occasions from the same mag. The primers barely showed evidence of being struck, even on the rounds that did fire. Is this a headspace problem, an ammo problem (UMC), or is this damn gun just afraid of this round? I took a gander at the tip of the firing pin and it looked okay. Help, I want to shoot more .357!

Try a different lot of ammo just to make sure. UMC .357 Sig jams my P226 everytime (the gun feeds everything else as smooth as can be) but works in the P229.

Why not call SIG and ask.IMHO their service has been outstanding. My 229 came as a .357. When the .40 barrels were available I called and asked about fitting and the response was"they are designed to be a drop-in part."The phone is 603-772-2302. Hope this helps. Rob

My first guess would be the UMC ammo. Others may like it, but I've had nothing but problems with that crap in all the calibers I've tried (9, .40, .44 Mag and .45). Having heard of persistant bullet setback problems in their 357 SIG stuff (I'd thumb pressure test yours, BTW), I've never even bothered trying it. It could be a barrel headspace problem, but the SIG .40 barrels I bought for my 229 and 226 357's had both been factory test-fired, and I'd expect that to be true for your 357 SIG barrel as well (assuming it was a factory barrel). Let us know if it turns out to be the ammo, eh?

I have tried UMC brand in several calibers, (38Spl/357Mag/45ACP) and I always ask myself after looking at the muzzle...."What is the propellant in these rounds? Pine Tar, Pyrodex, and molasses? sawdust, floor sweepings & Kitty Litter? asphalt and bubble gum? ? ? ? ? "
UMC brand, IMHO, is a very "dirty' round, and probably is a bit suspect in other areas, too. Maybe save an "empty' or 2, and compare them with another brand of "empty" and take a REALLY close look and the brass side by side.
