Sig 229 malfunction

My 229 is only a couple years old with maybe 1k rds down range. It's functioned flawlessly til now. It's started maybe once or twice per mag not extracting then jamming. I can drop the mag, cycle it and it'll extract, eject and continue on. I've field stripped and cleaned to no avail. I have not broken down the slide yet. Any suggestions?

Pretty classic failure to extract. Did you clean under the extractor lip thoroughly? Use a brass/bronze brush and even a little Gun Scrubber or non-chlorinated brake cleaner could help.

Did you examine the tip of the extractor? It might be damaged.

Or, as suggested in the prior post, there could be junk building up under the extractor (in the slide) that keeps it from closing fully (and getting a good grasp on the base of the round. It doesn't take much, and some times it'll clear itself by cycling the slide as your did. There may be more there that needs to be removed.

Also what kind of ammo were you using when you had the problem? Is it Winchester White Box per chance?? If so it could be a batch of poor quality ammo causing the problem and WWB seems to have QC issues these days.

I doubt this is the case but it is a really bad idea to put a round in the chamber and then drop the slide on it which can damage the extractor.

I have a SIG P229 that had (has?) the same problem - but, only with a specific manufacturer's 9mm ammunition. My SIG would not reliably extract Armscorp ammunition.

I checked the extractor, magazines, etc. and could never find anything wrong with the pistol or magazines. What happened with mine is the extractor claw would not pull the round out of the chamber. This happened repeatedly, every 5-7 rounds, with all eight magazines.

The failure to extract happened with all shooters who used the pistol. Again, consistently with every magazine and every 5-7 rounds.

After collecting a group of the brass that failed to extract, I very carefully measured them and found a slight deviation in the groove that the extractor claw fits into. The grooves were slightly shallower - that's the only anomaly I could find in either the gun or brass.

My SIG has worked flawlessly with nine different ammunition manufacturers and all bullet weights - but, no go with one batch of Armscorp 9mm.

Interestingly, the Armscorp ammunition worked with no problems in: HK P30, HK VP9, SIG P938, XDm 5.25, and a Springfield EMP.

I have no explanation for the failure to extract at this point - so, I just avoid Armscorp in the P229.

At one time a number of us were have a similar problem with WWB -- but I haven't used it in years, so don't know it's still an issue. The extractor groove on the 9mm 115 gr. ammo was like < rather than the / found with most ammo. Less for the extractor to grab. It probaby depends on the extractor design. A lot of folks, especially those with CZs, had problems with it (but stronger extractor springs helped CZ shooters.) CZ has since upgraded those springs.
