Sig 228

Have not been able to find any info about this pistol on the Sig website; please advise on the specs and how it compares with the 229.

Sig 228 is 9mm only. The 229 comes in 9mm, .40 S&W or .357 Sig. The 229 in .40 or .357 can shoot either caliber if you buy both barrels.

The 228 and 229 use the same frame but different slides. The slide on the 229 is Stainless where the slide on the 228 is folded carbon steel. This makes the 228 about 3 ounces lighter than the 229. But you have to take a little better care with the 228 since it is a steel slide that can rust.

I have a 228 but not a 229. I like the lighter weight of the 228 and the 229 seems a little nose heavy to me.

The 228 is a great gun but a little difficult to track down.

I have a P229 in 9mm. I love it, it points extremely well for me, I don't think its nose heavy personally, if you have a fully loaded mag inserted, I can balance it with a single finger under the trigger gaurd.

The P228 is the US military conceal carry sidearm, the M11. Special forces units like the Navy Seals use them, some not all though. I believe the reason new ones are hard to find is that Sig is filling all the military and police contracts and is currently not selling them to the public. You can certainly find them, generally used but on occasion NIB.

But I say get the P229...seriously 3 oz is for the average person not a concern. It also has a better slide and if you get a two tone version you'll have a great looking weapon and a very durable nickle finish.

My first duty weapon was a 228, which I still "occasionally" carry off-duty. I love it, had night sites installed shortly after I purchased it and I have had it refinished once. I have had it since 1995. It’s a good gun, accurate and carries easy both in a duty holster and IWB. I use it more so now for home defense and as a travel gun. And hi-caps are not that hard to find for it or the 229 9mm.

I quit carrying it on-duty when our agency started whining about non-issued gear and now carry my issued weapon, a USP compact in .357 SIG.

It’s a great gun though.

Great pistol. I miss mine. If for carry, keep it very clean and watch out for rust. It's an issue, especially in hot and humid environments. The latest ones I've seen have some rough machining marks around the front sight, and poor finish around the slide cover that are uncharacteristic of SIG Sauer quality. Maybe they're from a bad batch.

Supposedly they're for LEO sales only, but you can find one with a little effort. www.precisionarmory.com usually has excellent prices and a good stock on hand. You can get your FFL to order for you.

Since the 229 9mm shares the same slide as the .40 and .357, are the barrels interchangable or are is there more involved if you wanted to change calibers?

bamf, I believe that you will find that the
U.S. Navy Seal Team's are armed with a Sig-
Sauer P226 9m/m; and not the P228!!! :) The
U.S. Army C.I.D. issues the M11, or P228.

The dimensions of the barrel hole on the 9mm P229's slide is different than that of the .40 and 357SIG P229s. You can swap barrels betweem .40 and 347SIG P229s, and even get a special 9mm conversion barrel for them, but you can't do this with a 9mm P229.

I agree with bamf. Go with the 229. It's very solid and the weight difference is negligible. I have 3 barrels for my 229. Started with a .40, then bought a Bar Sto 9mm drop in barrel. No conversion problems. I use factory SIG 228 9mm mags with the 9mm barrel. Works flawlessly. Can't go wrong with the 229. Good luck!

SIGAHOLIC,

Have you ever tried to feed 9s from a 229 .40 mag? I'm curious because if it feeds reliably, even a "gelded" Clinton mag should hold 13-14 9s.

Thanks,
pojim

pojim,

Yes. I have tried it. It seems to work pretty well. I've only been able to fit 12 into those 10 round .40 mags. Got a great deal on 10 round 228 mags and use those most of the time. Do you have a 9mm conversion barrel?
