sig 228 vs. Glock 19

Sig 228
Points more naturally. Accurate as hell. Lots of hi caps available. Price is just right.

Glock are all of the above except for the feel.

I recently went back and forth between a G19 and a P228 and finally settled on a G23. Go figure. I prefer the G19/G23 over a P228 because:

1. Glocks are accurate, the P228 was just a tad more accurate at longer ranges (25 yards).

2. Glocks are a lot lighter, it weighs 23.45 ozs compared to 29.1 ozs on a P228. 5.65 ozs may not seem like a lot, but if you carry (licensed CCW or LEO), you feel it after just an hour. The less weight the better.

3. Glock's polymer frame absorbs the recoil and doesn't transmit it to the hand like the P228's aluminum frame. I used to dislike the polymer frame, but I've grown to appreciate it while firing full house .40 loads out of a G23. On a G19 it makes recoil negligible.

4. Trigger. Yes, the trigger I used to bash it a plus on a G19. You don't have to worry about DA/SA transition, about a long first shot, about decocking to make safe, you get the same pull always on a Glock.

5. Corrosion resistance is unmatched on a Glock. P228s won't rust before your eyes, but they do require care. If you live in a very hot, humid and wet climate you come to appreciate the ease of care of a Glock.

6. Simplicity of mechanism on a Glock is also without peer. All you need it a quality punch and patience to take apart a Glock. Once you do it it only gets easier. I shudder to think about fully taking apart a P228.

7. Rounded edges on a Glock make for comfortable carry. The P228s have some sharp edges, especially around the muzzle and the hammer. The hammer can cut into flesh, especially if you're on the heavy side.

Fire them side by side and see what works for you. After a long time of being a SIG Sauer stalwart I made the move to a G23 for the reasons stated. What works for me may or not work for you.

Don't get me wrong I adore Sig's(except their polymers), but I find the Glocks better fighting guns.
I find the Sig's more pleasurable to shoot at a slow pace. The Glocks shine when I do rapid fire. Their low bore axis helps minimize the recoil sensation.
I also don't find myself babying the Glock as much.
As much as I like Glocks, I would not trade my P220/P226 for a G21/19.

IMO, there's no way you can compare the mushy pull of a Glock trigger with a Sig's.

Some like that long double action pull. Frankly I'm not one of them. Again, this is personal preference with the user.

Weight is not even an issue. I carry all day long with a 40 oz. 1911. A Sig weighing less then 30 oz feels like paper.

I've owned a P228 as well as scads of Glocks (but, oddly, never a 9mm Glock). With neither pistol will you go wrong. Both are tops in reliability, with the SIG being marginally more accurate and the Glock being more immune to abuse. The P-series SIG has a bit more 'snob appeal', while the Glock gains you membership into a cult only slightly less fanatical than the Heaven's Gate loonies. Pick the one you shoot better, both are at the pinnacle of compact 9mm combat autos.

10mm: It's not the size of the Dawg in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog!

Can a civilian even buy a 228 right now? For awhile there, they became LEO only, supposedly because of a supply bottleneck. I tried finding the 228 on Sig's web site (boy ... they've been working on it since I was there last), but couldn't find it listed with the rest of their products.

David Avery has one listed right now in his Gunlist ad. It's NIB w/ two ten rounders. I think it's priced around $580, but don't quote me on that.

Not quite, amigo. My G21 has a 3.5# trigger on it. With the hammer down, that P228 is going to run you in the 10# range on the first pull.

Either or, in my opinion.

I've never owned a P228, but I did have a P239 for a few years. Sold it to acquire the funds for the G19 that I currently carry.

I prefer to have the same trigger pull every time I reach for the gun. That is the primary reason for making the move I did. The Sig is more accurate, and by a good margin. But at the ranges most people would ever use a handgun the Glocks are MORE than accurate enough for the job. I know I can shoot 3" groups at 20 yards with my G19, and I haven't even shot more than 200 rounds through it yet so I'm still figuring it out.

Have you fired both weapons on a range? If not, you should. They'll sort themselves out for you, more than likely.

Yes, you can still get P228s. My local shop has a slightly used one, less than 150 rounds fired (I know the previous owner so it's not a false claim) and a NIB one. Not sure how much the used one is but the NIB one is $580. Email me if you want the contact information.

I've never shot a Glock, something I'm going to remedy soon but the Sig P 228 was my first love. There's a certain mystique to some Sigs,1911's and weapons of that ilk that transcends practicality. That said, from what I've heard and read,Glock is a world class pistol and as long as I don't have to look at it too much I'd be just as happy to have one in my hands when TSHTF. :D

Loved my P226 but traded it for a used G19 with two hi-caps. P228 is nice but not as versatile - exposed hammer - heavier - thicker.
G19 easy.
