Sig 228 and 229, difference?

What is the difference between these two? I always thought it was that the 228 was 9mm and 229 was .40 s&w and .357Sig. I know the 228 is not in the current Sig line, but the website says the 229 is available in 9mm. What is the difference?

The Sig P228 offers better balance than it's counterpart,
the P229. The P228's slide is made from stamped sheet
metal; as opposed to the P229's slide being fabricated
from a solid block of stainless steel. And yes, the P228
is only offered in 9m/m; where as the P229 comes in
.40 S&W, .357 Sig, as well as 9m/m. Hope this helps.

228 slide is stamped.
229 slide is milled.

228 slide serrations run the height of the slide.
229 slide serrations run from the bottom to the center line.

228 only comes in 9mm
229 comes in 9mm, .40 cal & .357 Sig

228 can accept magazines from 226.
229 cannot.

228 is not widely available, at least not in the US anymore.
229 is widely marketed, sold and produced in the US.

Corsair you forgot one thing. The 228 is ALL German made the 229 is not. I prefer the 228 I like all german made guns.

Cocojo~

I think some of the newer P228's that have been seeping onto the market NIB are assembled here in the USA.

I bought a 228 in december and it is definitely not marked with the German proofs.

I'd never really thought about it Gary but doesn't everything made of metal technically start as cast? Seems to me you have to heat the metal to a molten stage at some point (if just to get it out of the rocks it came from) then poor it into a mold for shipment. Wouldn't that mean it "started" as cast? or have I got this all mixed up:confused:

As to the Sig 228/229 if I remember right isn't there only an once or two difference between the two. But everyone I've heard from says the 228 is great and the 229 is just so-so. Can you really tell that much difference in slide weight when firing them?

You right some are assembled in the US, but they are still made in Germany. All the parts of a 228 are made in Germany. If I disassemble a proofed 228 and re- assembly it, the parts are still made in germany it doesn't become american. Just because it is not proofed or assembled in Germany, doesn't mean it's not 100% German made.

Hello Blue Duck 357, my friend-

Yes sir, you most certainly can tell the difference (in weight)
between the Sig P228 and the P229. Once you have handled
both, you will see that the P228 balances perfectly; while the
P229 seems a little "top heavy", or unbalanced.

228/229 mag fit/interchange?

My only question is will the mags of a 228 fit and function in a 229 and vice-versa?

Thanks to my bud Ala Dan if you say it does then I KNOW it does. My main Sig info connection :)

nvrquit, sorry I cant answer your question other than to say that 228 and 229 mags (both in 9mm) are always listed separately on websites selling them. So I'd suspect their is some difference.

I'd also be interested if someone could stop by to tell us what that difference is.

Greeting's nvrquit-

Please read the above post by my friend, blades67.

228 vs 229 mag fit...

okay Ala Dan & blades67,

I'll take it as given that 228/229 mags are not interchangeable, but can a reason be given as to why?

Physical design/configuration?

I guess it's a mechanical background, but I kinda like to know the reason, just out of curiosity.
