SIG 226 vs 228

Want to purchase my first 9mm. Shot a Glock 17 at the range the other day. Not bad. Then shot a SIG 228. WOW! Big difference. When I went to look into getting one, I was getting mixed info on the 228 vs the 226. Some say must go with the 226. Others not so blunt. I am not going to carry and will only use it for target shooting and eventually competitions (IPSC, IDPA). The range didn't have a 226, so I couldn't shoot it to see how the longer barrell, a little extra weight and height would affect it.

Can somebody help me here? I am itching to buy a SIG, just don't want to worry about it after I buy it.

Thanks!!

I faced the same dilemma several years ago..., and I bought the P228.

My decision was a matter of taste. It was my CCW for three years.

You are in the right way, you will not wrong with any Sig Pseries.

Good luck and welcome to TFL.

Since you are using it for targets you may want to consider the P226 Sport model. It has a compensator and adjustable sights and is stainless steel. It will definitely have more heft than the standard 226 and substantially more than a 228. I don't know if they are available yet or not. Check with Sig on that. Also, some of the competition shooters here could tell you what class it would be legal to shoot it in. They will probably tell you to get a larger caliber to make major.

I have a 228 and it is ok. I definitely have better pistols but I bought it more as a blaster than anything. I fit it with a Bar-Sto barrel, adjustable sights, and a short trigger. Still, it will always be a combat style handgun.

If your primary use is range/target/competition, I'd go with the 226. I've got both, and I really like the 228 for CCW and general plinking, but shooting for points, the 226 is a better platform. If you can go the extra $$$, the 226 Sports is really nice.

Thanks for the input. The 226 is kind of the way I was leaning, but I think you have put me over the edge. I don't want to spend the money on the Sport model, at least until I know I will stick with it!!

THANKS!

Greeting's and welcome to TFL,

the only negative thing that I can think of
about either one, is the fact that the P226
has a "European style grip", as opposed to
the P228's American grip angle.:D:)
