Sig 225 or 239

I am thinking of picking up another Sig, this time in 9mm. I have a P239 in .357 and like it well enough, but I found a P225 for a great deal. As I understand it the only real differences are the 239 has a machined slide, and the 225 doesn't(is this an issue with a 9mm?), and the slide is half an inch longer on the 225. What is your experience with the P225?

There's more to it than the slide. The P239 and the P225 are basically entirely different pistols. They have different frames, slides, hammer drops and slide release levers. The P225 is more like a single stack P228, but with a deeper grip. I like them a lot. About 1.5 years ago they were being cleared out for $379 from CDNN. Since then prices have gone up steadily and now the lowest I've seen is $550. If you found a deal don't miss it. You won't be sorry.

Tecolote is right. The Sig 225 is basically a single stack version of the Sig 228... And coming across one is practically a rarity... So if you've found a good deal on it, and you are at least interested in it, then I would buy the Sig 225... You can always find/buy a Sig 239 later...

Ooops... I guess that I'm in error concerning which came first (225)... Thanks for the correction guys... :)

I have the P225. The grip on the P239 does not come close to fitting my hand. The P225 is wonderful although it is ONLY a 9mm (if that concerns you), whereas the P239 can be had in .357 SIG and .40 S&W also. K-Y Imports has some used P225's for $329, that is what I paid for mine from CDNN, but they are now out.

Correction, just for the record. The 225 is not a single stack version of the 228. The 228 is a double column version of the 225. :p Between the two, 225 was around first and is #1 in my book.

If you carry 2 spare mags, it suddenly becomes a slim high cap w/25 rounds at your disposal. Nevertheless, you'll want to dispose of them in the proper direction. They w/go where they are told to go. Just tell the sight where to point.

Seriously, Stretch. At the shop, hold them both w/your shootin hand and point in safe direction. How does it point and feel in your paw? That is more important than caliber or size when your comparing these apples n apples. I think they should have simply rechambered and made mags for different calibers for the premium 225. .45 Would've been nice. You may have noticed that I have a bias. ;) If you like your 239 better, I'd just find a new barrel in the other caliber.

As to the "sheet metal" slide of the 225. I'd first try to find someone who has had any breakage or wear problems w/their 225 before I'd worry about it. Those who boast the merrits of their heavy duty stainless steel forged chunks of solid forged 229 slides try to make the German made counter parts (ie. 225) out to be something one step up from aluminum foil. I personally don't think that slide strength is an issue, even if SIG ARMS had taken my advice and made a 225-.45ACP or 45 Super w/long barrel. Dag nabbit, they never listen to me. Sorry, 245 is nice, but not a 225 folks.

robert

ps: If you decide against the 225, would you let me know and tell me how to get in touch w/this dealer? :D

I like the p226 in 9mm, but if you can find a great deall on a 225 go for it. I am way way impressed with Sig firearms (the entire line).

I love the SIG 239 and own it in both 9mm and .357 SIG. Nevertheless, I'd try both the 239 and the 225 and happily choose whichever fits your grip best. The only thing you won't be able to experience in most gun shops is the joy of shooting the 239 once you put Hogue grips on it. I don't know if you can get Hogue grips for the 225. Regards, Dennis

Equalizer,

My bad, you're right, the master piece of Swiss design and German engineering, the P228 came after the P225. ;)

As for me I'd take a P225 over a P239 anyday of the week because it is German made. I'm just freaky that way. By all means, get what points best, feels best, and works best for YOU.

I have a question about the SIG P225.

Is the trigger reach about the same as with the P229 in .40S&W? Or is the trigger reach on the P225 substantially shorter than the P229?

Skorz, it is shorter because the P229 grip is thicker. I use the standard trigger on the P225, but have the short trigger fitted to my P229.

Rats! I feel for you. Happened to me at one show. Argie HP clone I've been after was sitting NIB in box with two standard capacity box. Price wasn't a bargain at $400 but I wanted it bad. I didn't have a penny in my pocket and the seller didn't take plastic. I asked him to hold it for me but he said he couldn't do that without a deposit. By the time I got back from an ATM it was gone.
