Sig 225 Action Question

I have a NIB 225 that I just field stripped and cleaned. Both before and after the cleaning, the slide-to-frame action seems a little rough. Specifically, if I release the slide SLOWLY holding it the entire length of travel, it doesn't completely lock up at the end of travel. The barrel is locked firmly into the slide, but the barrel and slide have to be "nudged" about 1/64" forward. This does not happen on my 226 which has been from day one as smooth as butter. Is this a problem and should I just shoot the damn thing?

Thanks

What happens if you release the slide quickly? Does it lock up properly? I'd lube it and take it to the range for a test drive. You might also want to post at www.sigforum.com A couple of SIG Sauer armorers post there often.

I experienced this with both a P225 and a P220... but both guns always went BANG! Wish I still had both...

I have a 225 that when new was exactly like yours. I own/have owned a bunch of SIGs, and none were as tight as this 225. When the slide goes forward after each shot, it will go fully into battery. Just shoot it, it will loosen up.

Thanks for the help. Tecolote - to answer your question, when I release the slide, even from about a half inch from full battery, it locks up perfectly. Guess I just need to shoot it!

Thanks

Noban,

Years ago I was concerned about this very problem in a 225. After I cleaned it thoroughly and replaced the recoil spring, it worked fine. Recheck the locking lug and slide and frame rails. The roughness sounds like it might be a tiny bit of unburnt powder in there. Reclean with a Q tip and some solvent. Relube every contact point. Try a good light grease like Brownells Action Lube. Try working slide again.

How many rounds has it been since you last changed the recoil spring? I look at springs, recoil springs in particular like oil changes in a car. They will work with old oil, but should be changed every 3000 mi. or so depending upon driving style and conditions. Your SIG's spring should be replaced every 1,500 rounds. It won't hurt to do it more often. Use a heavier spring from Trapper or Wolff if you use hot ammo or brass goes over 10ft.

If you ease your slide forward ever so slightly and it doesn't go into battery don't worry about it. As long as its going into battery when you rack the slide and when it goes bang, its OK.

Have fun shooting one of the most finests pistols in history, IMHO.

If you continue having problems with that critter and want to put it to sleep, just give me a holler. I'll be happy to give it a new home. ;)
